In the age of remakes, sequels and reboots a new popular trend is brining back old Nostalgia properties and giving them a sequel. The prime examples are Dumb and Dumber and Star Wars. Other movies that "in talks" are ghost busters, blade runner (Ridley Scott's says the script is even finished) and a bunch of other stuff.
If you know me I actually like reboots and sequels, If their done good and shows a different perspective on the source material (ex: Dawn and Rise of the planet of the names.) Although often times what gets sequels and reboots a bad name is when their done bad (ex: Tim Burton's planet of the catastrophe.) As my American history teacher says everyone forgets when you do it good, everyone remembers when you do it bad.
In my opinion the main problem that often is the reason these reboots or sequels are bad is one thing... Nostalgia.
I mean this in a different way from them defacing the continuity of the previous movie (though in some cases that is still problem) I mean this in a way, when a movie pays too much fans service or Nostalgia to the previous movie and skips out on having an actual movie.
When you are making a sequel or reboot of anything, the movie has to be able to stand on it's own, it can do that when it's too busy rehashing ideas or doing fans service to give fans of Nostalgia kick, skipping out completely on new ideas or original concepts which is what a reboot is suppose to do. A prime example is Star Trek into darkness, I overall don't hate that movie but I don't think it's a good movie since most of it's a two hour fan service fest. And before you even accuse me of being a whiny Star Trek fan girl I don't even like Star Trek (I'm Planet of the apes kid.)
Nostalgia is not at all bad, it gives a good memories of the bad and lets us look back on old things we used to like and give us an insight into the person we have become. It's not good when you dwelling on it so much that you don't movie on to new things.
The reason I am venting on this is because of my feelings on the new Star Wars sequel which at first I was excited for but with everything coming out about that movie makes me take two steps back and feel as if nothing has chance about that movie compared to the original Star Wars and nothing new is happening besides the new cast.
I love looking back at the old stuff but I want new things too. So that's my two cents about the whole Nostalgia thing, thanks for reading.
