Mary and Max movie review

I'm BACK! I went to Orlando for my mom's birthday so I missed anything that came out in theaters but I checked out a few movies on Netflix and a new movie that not very many people saw was a movie called Mary and Max and this is the movie review for it.

Mary and Max is about eight-year old Mary Daisy Dinkle and Max Horowitz two friendless people who find comfort in each other while their lives are complete shit. If that does not sound like the most depressing movie ever because it is. Mary and Max is a genuinely great movie that unless you are in a certain mood  you will get instantaneous depression like I did. Holy Crap this movie goes under the category of the most depressing movies that are great but you can only watch once category.

Yet the movie being a sad film is not what makes it great. The movie is a claymation animation movie (I freaking love claymation animation) with a black, white and muddy color palette except for the color orange which of course has a lot of symbolic meaning, this movie is very visual interesting in both it's design and how it uses it along creating some pretty dark and pretty uplifting scenes. Some of which made me cover my eyes or had my jaw drop. The animation especially when it comes to face design and emotion is very good. as well.

The place where the movie shines the most though is in it's writing and I have to give Adam Elliot the writer, because this movie is just about Max and Mary, it's about their lives and their friendship but because of how well-written it is it makes even the most stone cold people melt and cry for these two because they are legitimately  great characters with more depth and love then anything live-action I could have ever watched. They are the thrust of the movie and they keep it going to the point of where it ends your sad because that's it you'll ever see of them. Adam Elliot I think also tackles mental illnesses better than any live-action Oscar bait movie out there and is very honest about it particularly in one of the two climaxes in the film.

The voice acting is actually very limited to the Max, Mary and the narrator (props to Barry Humpries too) and a very one sentences from an otherwise substantial cast of characters. Yet it is all very good and very emotional at the same time.

This movie is just phenomenal with the only problem really being structure, it does not have a bad structure but it is very weird especially when it comes to conventional story lines with a rising action, climax, falling action and so on. I can't really tell if it's a bad thing but it is very weird.

I give this movie a 9.5/10- Just freaking amazing movie that everyone should go watch (in a certain mood by the way because this is a borderline annalistic movie by the way) even with some weird structure things.
