I didn't hate this movie, I really didn't, I was bored to tears but I didn't hate it. Just getting that out of the way now. The movie certainly is not my favorite movie of the year but I don't absolutely hate it like most critics. I never watched the previous expendables movies (the first one I was too young to see and the second one I missed it.) So this is my first exposure to the expendables franchise.
This film pertains to Sylvester Stallone (no one cares or remembers the character names as most of these people are playing themselves) after a mission gone bad decides that his team is too old (even though he himself is near seventy) and goes to find a new younger team to stop Mel Gibson, a former expendable. The main problem with this film is the fact that it's boring as all hell. I was fidgeting through this entire thing and almost thought of ditching my dad (who loves this series) to go watch Guardians of the galaxy again. Most of the action is very much action stripped from other better movies and is very tideous, especially the end fight which goes on for twenty-five minutes. That's bad when it comes to action movies.
I know a lot of people complained about the whole going from rated-r to PG-13 thing and while I am typically on the side that says a movie doesn't have to be rated-R to be good, a lot more blood and gore in a movie which clearly wanted to be rated-R might have helped me keep focus. Another bad thing is that this movie uses a lot of CG and it is some of the worst CG I've seen all year. Oh my god it was practically cringe worthy.
Most of the people in this movie were fine overall, none of them were really acting and for the most part just playing themselves. A mistake they made was taking Terry Crewes (who is one of the human national treausres) for ninety-eight percent of the movie and only having him show up in the last five minutes so he was basically a cameo. A thing they did in this movie was bring in new younger team and none of them are really that memorable except for the hacking guy because he was the only useful one of the new kids. Mel Gibbson as the villain is ok, he's serviceable enough but he barely registered with me. Antonio Banderas has been the most talked about one in this movie and while sometimes he walks the knife edge of annoying he for the most part is very likeable, very charming and very adorable. So that's good for a guy who I haven't really seen in really anything as of late.
I give this a 5/10~ Not as bad but I don't have much to say about it
