Weekend box office prediction~Anything but Adam Sandler please!

    So the two movies coming out this week are Pixels and Paper town. Pixels is the newest Adam Sandler comedy about aliens finding a NASA time capsule with classic video games inside and turning them into the real thing so now a bunch of 40-year old nerds with some of the best classic video game skills are commissioned by President Kevin James to take them down.  Paper Town however is another John Greene adaptation about a high school senior named Quentin "Q" Jacobson trying to find and the uncover the mystery behind his neighbor and long-time crush Margo Roth Spiegleman.


    Out of the two the movie I am seeing this weekend is Paper Town because I am-
          A.) Genuinely interested in seeing the movie
          B.) Made plans weeks in advance to go see this
          C.) I can't stand to see another Adam Sandler film ever again after Grown Ups 2 where I contemplated burning the theater down and taking a hot knife to my eyeballs

         It will be hard to tell which movie (Ant-man, Paper Town, and Pixels) will take the #1 place but if I had to put money on it I think Ant-man will keep it's position (if by a slight margin.) Now before you call me a Marvel Fan girl hear me out. Paper Town while it is getting hype after how successful The Fault in our Stars was but unlike Fault in our Stars, Paper Town isn't getting the same amount of attention but reviews have been good and people are excited to see it so it will probably be #2. Pixels will most likely take #3 because while it does look better than his most recent films I think people are finally done with Adam Sandler and the reviews have been horrendous for this movie so that adds to it.

Weekend box office~ Still good

  This week Marvel (surprisingly) takes #1 at the box office (If at a pretty low sum) this week. Trainwreck took #3 place but at a pretty good sum despite it's placing. Both movies fell way under my expectations but neither did poorly necessarily especially Trainwreck, they will still both make enough to surpass (especially trainwreck) their relatively budgets due to word of mouth as both movies have been well received and are loved by anyone who sees them. You can tell for Ant-man the Edgar Wright stigma still holds while Trainwreck's smaller scale despite it's big marketing campaign did trip those movies a bit but they still did alright.

    I'm surprised how far Minions fell from $115 million to $49 million as that's a little over a 50% drop in under a weekend which is expected considering while the hype was huge the response that came from word of mouth ranged from "it's entertaining" to "Don't waste your money on it." I have no idea what Bjarangi Bhaijaan is but from the name it's most likely an Asian or Indian foreign film and I'm surprised it made it into the top ten without much buzz (or awareness of it's existence.) Not much to say as everything else just went down one slot so it was uneventfull every where else.


Tomorrow is my review of Ant-man and the reason I didn't get it up earlier was because of the fact on Sunday I got home really late, on Monday blackout that went on in my street and I'm trying to get my sleeping schedule back in order so I try not to stay up too late. So I'll try to get it out tomorrow but no promises.

Weekend box office prediction~ Second is the best!

A/N: I know about Yesterday, I got really distracted


    So this weekend is the two movies coming out are Marvel's Ant-man and the Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck. Out of the two I am seeing Ant-man to review but I do want to see both because both look pretty good in all honesty. Ant-man because it looks funny, exciting and I love origin stories and Trainwreck because like Ant-man it looks funny, it has an interesting story and I love Bill Hader.

  While I think Minions will still be at the #1 spot I think Ant-man will do well because of the fact comic book movies are still everywhere and Marvel is still Marvel so even though Ant-man had a lot of production troubles it looks good and so far has been getting good reviews but it could be hindered by the Edgar Wright scandal that still lingers on the movie so close to release. Not to mention while I really liked Age of Ultron (8/10) many didn't and thought it was one of the weaker Marvel movies (not bad Marvel has not had an outright bad movie yet) so the stigma from that could leak into this film as well.

   Trainwreck has a chance of maybe upsetting it because the reviews have been even better for Trainwreck and the marketing has been huge for this movie which could be a good thing or a hindrance. On one hand the marketing for this movie has been so great and so numerous a lot of people know about it and can make up their minds about whether or not to go see it. Yet because their has been so much marketing for this movie with different clips from the movie they may have revealed a lot of their best jokes and best gags in the trailers so if their aren't more or even better material in the movie word of mouth will come swiftly that you don't need to watch the movie just watch the trailers.

The Minions review

   
        The Minions movie is a spin-off of the Despicable Me movies about the corn pop shaped henchmen to Guru and their origin story. I loved the first Despicable Me movie it was funny, charming, heartwarming and a movie I used to watch on repeat until I grew absolutely sick of it. The second Despicable movie however while I liked it and it wasn't a bad movie held many problems and I didn't really enjoy as much as the first movie and how I feel about the second Despicable Me movie is how I feel about the Minions movie. I liked it and it wasn't necessarily a bad movie but it had many problems and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. I was pumped for this movie going in and when I came out I just felt 'meh.'

        The minions movie is about the minions before they met Guru trying to find a more permanent evil master to serve. Three minions Kevin, Stewart and Bob (all played by Pierre Coffin) embark on a journey to find their tribe a master and come across Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock) who hires them but makes them try to steal the queen of England's crown in order to prove themselves and of course the minions being the minions mess it up and shenanigans ensue.

      This at it's heart and sole is a comedy movie meaning it's main motivation is jokes and funny characters not so much in terms of plot and message which is ok. One of my favorite movies of last year was Penguins of Madagascar and it was mainly about funny jokes than a logical plot. If comedies were judged on plots a lot of comedies wouldn't be as well reviewed.

  Yet the thing about the minions movies is that for the most part it's only half the time funny and while the other half isn't boring or cringe-worthy it's kind of unspectacular. That half of the movie didn't even have me chuckling or giggling it was just there. (If it sounds as if I'm being vague about this movie is because since comedy is the main thrust for a comedy movie it's hard to talk about one without giving most of it away.) Now that doesn't mean there weren't moments that had me crying in my seat as quite a few jokes especially in the beginning had me doing that. For the most parts kids will laugh more than anyone over the age of thirteen and if you want a time waster for the kids on a hot long summer day kids would definitely appreciate the movie.

   Now that I've talked about the comedy what about the characters and while the comedy is a mix bag they're for the most part pretty good. While the minions as much as I love them they're better in small dosages but they held up the movie really well and especially our leads the determined and leader Kevin, the lazy and musically inclined Stewart and the optimistic and super cute Bob (he's my new favorite minion) were all fun to watch and were good leads with a solid motivation of wanting to get a new master for the minion tribe.

   The new villain this time around is Scarlett Overkill and I loved her. She was funny yet different from Guru in a sense that's she's more black and white evil than him and I'm glad they didn't do a Guru rehash. They did give a her a backstory in a very subtle and clever sort of way that made you understand where she was coming from yet didn't make you sympathize with her. I also liked her demeanor and personality throughout the movie and that while she was way more evil she had a very cheerful, easy-going and slightly gentle way about her and Sandra Bullock did a great job and was very charismatic in the role. Jon Hamm as Herb Overkill was fun to watch and while he didn't have much to do he did a good job with what he was given.

   Yet the ones who really stole the show for me were the Nelson's a family the minions meet on the way to villain- con and I don't want to give much away about them because they have about 50% of the gut busting funny jokes in the movie and I would just smile and laugh every time they came on screen.

    The animation is also really good with a lot of bright colors and shapes and I love the sixties era setting of this movie. If your a huge sixties era nerd you'll definitely like this movie because they're are a lot of sixties era references that was well done.

    A problem of this movie is pacing. The pacing is very fast and fast pacing in comedies could be either the death of or the salvation of comedies. While it's not the death of the movie it doesn't give you time to enjoy the movie and it makes the movie feel rush and almost incomplete. For example, on the day I saw this movie I went out to dinner but because of how long it took the waiter to bring my food and what time the movie was at I basically had to speed eat my food only to feel unsatisfied and still hungry. That's the same problem Despicable Me 2 had the pace was so fast the jokes all came one after another so you couldn't enjoy it all.

  Another problem was charm like Despicable Me 2 it didn't carry the too much charm. The characters were charming but nothing in the movie touched you. I don't mean in terms of intense sadness or anything you associate the phrase "it hit me in the feels" but in terms of joy and lasting impression. While Despicable Me 1 hit you in the feels it also hit you in the smiles.


I give this movie a 6/10~ good animation, setting and characters yet it the comedy was 50/50,  pacing was horrible and wasn't that charming.

Weekend box office prediction~ All Hail King Bob!

   The big movie coming out this week is Minions the Despicable Me spin-off staring who else but the minions before they met Guru and when they were originally working for Scarlet Overkill.

   This movie will make a lot of money guaranteed, the minions are one of the most popular and one of the most marketable non-Disney creations in the last decade. They're cute, mischievous and stupid and just deviously likeable. I myself have a minions Pajama's t-shirt and stuffed 'Kevin' doll. They stole the show in both movies and are the back bone of the entire franchise. Most people who know about this movie are excited and want to see it with the only thing  probably holding it back would be the not so great reviews it's been getting but still it's probably going to have at the very least a strong opening weekend and it will still make it's money back as it's budget is very small compared to other animated films like Big Hero Six (about $170 million) and Inside out ($175 million.)

    I really don't have much to say on this week's box office prediction other than Paramount Pictures must be pissed since they were pretty much betting all their rights on the Terminator franchise (in 2019 the rights to Terminator is supposed to relapse to James Cameron) since this is currently the worst critically reviewed Terminator movie (even more than Salvation) and unless it slowly gains momentum the lowest grossing Terminator movie.
