God I can never seem to get the Age of Ultron review off the ground. I have U.S History EOC prep so that was why I couldn't get that review done again. Not to mention I'm having a hard time just expressing my opinion on the movie so it may take a while.
Anyway it was revealed that Pitch Perfect 2 the sequel to the cult hit original took the box office with a really surprising amount. I predicted at most it would make around $50 million dollars and instead made a lot more. I'm conflicted on this as while I'm glad a movie about girls directed by a women is making a lot of money (an on a relatively small budget which is even better since it shows smaller budget movies do make money) but in terms of quality while I only saw the middle and ending part of the original pitch perfect the entirety of pitch perfect 2 wasn't as good or memorable as what I saw from the first especially in terms of music. Also I don't want to rag too much on Elizabeth Banks because I love her as an actress and comedian and I'm glad more women directors are coming into the fold as a directorial debut it was kind of bad. Not that the movie itself is bad if I never get to the review for it let me say this it is phenomenally acted, good writing, while not as memorable it still has very good music and comedy but sadly it's all bogged down by Banks poor directing yet I would still recommend seeing it even if on DVD.
Mad Max the other movie that came out didn't do as well. Now again it's not going to do bad it did better than the $38 million I predicted but on a $150 dollar budget at most it will break even. Which by the way I wonder where in the world that money went since you basically are filming with junk when filming a post-apocalypse movie and the marketing didn't kick in until two weeks ago so I have to imagine it went towards actor salaries. It's a shame because while I don't have much interest in the Mad Max franchise or really gory violence that's not video games I heard it was a great movie and is actually pretty pro-feminist from what I've heard. I think the problem with Mad Max is that it has been a sort of dead franchise for a while especially with the Mel Gibson taint all over it and another thing like Dredd or Edge of Tomorrow I think marketing really killed this movie. If they had planned up more of the female side of it and in the early trailers balanced out the plot and action elements it would have fared better and not to mention they didn't really market it full force until the last two weeks before the movie and by then it was a little late.
So that's how our recent contenders did how did everyone else do?
Weekend box office
1.) Pitch Perfect 2- $70 million
2.) Mad Max Fury Road- $45 million
3.) Avengers age of Ultron- $38 million
4.) Hot Pursuit- $ 5 million
5.) Furious 7- $ 3.6 million
6.) Paul Blart 2- $3.5 million
7.) The Age of Adaline- $ 3.2 million
8.) Home- $2.5 million
9.) Ex Machina- $ 2 million
10.) Far From Madding crowd- $1 million
On other notes Age of Ultron has joined the billion dollar club so Kevin Feige can afford another yacht at this point, Home is still doing amazingly well so Dream Works studio gets to stay in production for another year, Furious 7 still going strong and it's good to see a period piece(Madding Crowd) and an Indie movie (Ex Machina) doing so well.
So that's the weekend box office and see you hopefully soon no promises though.
