Editorial~ Ranking the Marvel movies

I know this was supposed to come out yesterday but I got writers block and didn't think of this idea until today. Of my schedule this is probably the hardest one to write because I have to think up of different ideas if a trailer or something interesting doesn't happen for me to talk about.. Sorry.

Anyway since I am seeing Age of Ultron tomorrow I decided it was time for me to rank the Marvel movies. I love Marvel comics and Marvel movies (I am in a Captain America shirt with my Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America and that big Marvel comics group posters in my room as I write this.) My favorite male superhero is Daredevil and  I am loving the new Mark Wade Daredevil G. Willow Wilson Ms. Marvel run. Now that doesn't mean I don't love DC my favorite female superhero of all time is Barbara Gordon (both Oracle and Batgirl verison), my favorite villains are Batman villains, I love the Dark Knight and the '79 Superman movie and I love the Gail Simone run of Batgirl. However Batman V. Superman doesn't come out until next year and Age of Ultron is out now and I love the Marvel movies.

I've seen all of them now (I just recently saw Incredible Hulk and First Avenger), I think have a pretty firm opinion on my rank of them. Now none of them have been outright bad, even the weakest ones have just been OK overall. Now this is my opinion so no one get mad over where I ranked them (especially the Top Five ones.) Also this is not counting the TV shows as I am still finishing Daredevil and Agent Carter and I have not watched Agents of Shield yet. Now here we go.

10.) Incredible Hulk
Of all the Marvel/Avengers Characters Hulk's always been my least favorite of them. All the Hulk stories I've seen have been him on the run (no I haven't read Planet Hulk) and I don't know why but I can't really get that into him. While the concept of a man whose science experiment accidently turns him into a green rage monster is cool in execution I've never really liked him. The plot kind of bored me and I really do not like Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, I found her kind of dull and annoying. I did like however all the Hulk fight scenes especially at the end with Abomination, I really liked Thunder Bolt Ross and I really liked Ed Norton as the Hulk even if he's only in this movie he's still a great stage prescence. Still it's OK and if your a completionist I do recommend you checking them out.

9.) Iron man 2
I don't think Iron man 2 is that bad, it's super flawed yes but it's not that bad of a movie. I've always like the character of Iron man, a rich scientist/inventor/businessman who has to use science to save his life and fight crime has always interested me and while he's not the most relatable superhero he is one of the most interesting. I really like the idea of Tony Stark having to deal with the fact his life may be over and how he deals with his immortality and legacy, I've always liked Pepper Potts and her relationship with Tony Stark (who she didn't get with in the comics even though she did like him), I like the portrayal of James Rhodes War Machine by Don Cheadle, Robert Downey J.R is still awesome and the movie is just plain fun.

8.) Thor (2011)
I do like this movie and I find it really entertaining and visually interesting to look out. I also do like Chris Hemsworth a lot as Thor, he does a good job playing a man who learns to be humble and how to grow up and Loki is a great villain but the reason I put it second to last is I actually like Thor the Dark World a bit more than this in terms of entertainment and visuals even though it's more flawed of a movie. I also don't think Jane Foster is that bad of a love interest, she's smart, she's nice, determined, is completely passionate about science yet is very stern and won't let Thor get away things.

7.) Thor the Dark World
I do like Thor the Dark World better than Thor but clearly not by a whole lot. This movie to me is super funny and I just have a great time watching it, it's also the most visually stunning movie out of the two, I actually like how Loki's portrayed more in this than in the original Thor or Avengers, I like Frigga and the relationship Thor and Loki have. Now the villain Malketih (played by Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccelston) does suck out of all the Marvel villains and while I overall do like the relationship between Thor and Jane it does derail the plot a bit but I like at the end Thor leaves to go be with her. Also the post Credit scene at the end of this is one of my favorite just for how weird it is.

6.) The Avengers
Now before you crucify me hear me out I really like the Avengers, it's one of the funniest movies and most entertaining movies of the entire Marvel Bunch, it is a amazing seeing all these guys from different movies together, I love what they did with Black Widow, Loki's cool as the villain but in comparison to my top five coming up, my love for this movie pales in comparison to my love for the other movies. Now I will still repeat this movie and watch it when it on and then rewatch it I still love of my next top five even more.

5.) Captain America the First Avenger
I really like the character of Captain America (not just because he's played by Chris Evans) but I love how he's just an all around nice guy who just wants to do the right thing any way he can, even when some of the worst things happen to him he keeps going and doesn't let it get him down . This is why I love superman and don't like batman: Superman he's the last of his species, their are people who are continuously doing bad things in the world even if he tries and stops them and some of the worst things just get thrown at him (i.e death of supergirl, his own death, Lex Luthor becomes president, people turn against him) he keeps going because he wants to do the right thing. Now some people might call him and Cap ' boring boy scouts' but I like boy scouts and they can be interesting if they're written correctly like this movie did. Captain America is portrayed as an interesting person whose just out to do the right thing, so many movies fail at this but this movie does it perfectly. I love period pieces, I love the villain, I love Bucky and the Howling Commandos, Howard Stark, General Phillips, the ending is great and the story of the movie. The only things I don't like are how he gets frozen and that whole end fight sequence is just kind of stupid and I actually am not that big of a fan of Agent Carter and the relationship she has with Steve. Don't get me wrong I love Peggy in her own show Agent Carter so far but here she's kind of a boring, tough as nails, independent women who can shoot a gun which while badass and is kind of boring to the flawed, relatable and Smart Peggy Carter in the show.

4.) Iron man 3
If I had made this list around the time this movie came out this movie would not have been has high as it is currently. However this movie is like the Wolverine (which came out the same year) and that it gets better with each passing and the more you think about it (unlike the Dark Knight rises which gets worse.) I love this movie, to me this is Robert Downey J.R's best performance as Iron man who is now dealing with PTSD after the Avengers and is having trouble coping with that now but things goes wrong and Tony finds himself at his lowest point having now to figure out whether or not he can still be a hero without the Iron man suit which at this point he has become almost dependent upon. I really like Pepper Potts in this movie to and how she has to deal with Tony and his problems and does in the end save her man. I also like a lot of the supporting character like Rebecca Hall's Maya Hanson, I love John Favreu's Happy Hogan, I still love Don Cheadle's James Rhodes yet to me the best parts of this movie are Aldrich Killian, the story and the plot twist.

I know people hate the plot twist, I was kind of mad too but think about the movie and the allegory this movie represents- post 9/11. This movie is about healing after a great tragedy (in the MCU it's the battle for New York) and how to deal with the evils that spring from it in this case terrorism. The plot twist is one of the best plot twist in the last decade, it's smart, fits with the story, it's shocking when it happens yet makes sense ( a twist  M. Night Shyamlan and Christopher Nolan should learn from.) Guy Pearce plays a magnificent job as Aldrich Killian who while I am not so keen he started out as a really awful stereotypical geek I am a fan of how evil and smart he is. Think about what Aldrich Killian does in this movie, he takes soldiers who have lost their limbs to terrorist bombings and suicide bombers and turns them into one and sets them off in areas full of people dragging their reputations to the ground and making them seem as terrorist for which he feels no remorse for and he creates the perfect embodiment of a terrorist Americans are terrified of, kills people on live television, successfully kidnaps and almost kills the president, manipulates the media to his advantage making this seem like the next big terrorist organization and adverting attention away from him and even gets the vice president of that universe to work for him in exchange for giving his daughter a limb which if you've seen the movie would have gone horribly wrong. That's why he's a great villain in my opinion. Also I really love Trevor Slattery he's just a riot.

3.) Guardians of the Galaxy
This movie is weird, a bit of raunchy and kind of campy- and I love it. If I had a choice between Dark and Gritty and Campy and light as much as I like darker subject material and I absolutely love grey morality I for the most part will always choose Campy and light (which is why I love something like Assasination Classroom and don't like Attack on Titan.) Now of course that campy and light does at the very least need some serious moments to balance it out and this movie for while the most part a weird science fiction induced dream does have a surprising amount of touching and heart breaking moments yet it balances it out perfectly. While the villains are not the best I do still really like Ronan the Accuser, I've warmed to Nebula, I find Tanaleer Tivan the Collector fascinating and strange and I freaking love Yondu and his Ravangers who are basically space rednecks and they're a riot on screen.

I also really like the main cast, in my original review for this movie one of the guardians who I liked the least was Gamora but on a few more viewings I really like her, a warrior who wants redemption for what she did, wants freedom from her father and while has a mostly antagonizing relationship with her step sister still loves her and wants to help her, I also like her relationship with Peter Quil instead of romance they decide to give her more of equal partnership type relationship and make her Star Lord's second in command. I also really like Star Lord, Chris Pratt was the perfect choice for Star Lord a fun, yet tragic hero with an interesting man-child complex. Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer is amazing another perfect blend of funny yet serious and I think Dave Bautista actually does a better job in the drama department than in the funny department. Still the hearts of the movie are Rocket Racoon and Groot who are basically the Chewbacca and Han of this series (yet aren't as self-important and kind of annoying to me as Han Solo, I still love chewie though.)

I also like the Nova Core and while they aren't their a whole lot they do make an impact. The movie is also super funny the Kevin Bacon Speech (no matter if the father is J'Son or not Kevin Bacon should be cast in the movie as Star Lord's dad) being the best part and of course the soundtrack is amazing (I own the entire thing on my IPhone.) The visuals and the world of this movie are also great and I love that this science fiction movie actually has color to it and is just as strange and out their as it's title suggest. In fact just about everything in this movie is strange and out there which is why I love this movie.

2.) Iron man (2008)
Yeah I really like the Iron man franchise, a lot. I love the character of Tony Stark and I love the character of Pepper Potts and their relationship, I love the action and humor of these movies and this is where it all got started. Now I don't like this movie by virtue of it being the first of the Iron man trilogy or the fact it was the first Marvel Cinematic universe movie but by virtue it's just a good movie. It's the tightest written and most well structured movie of the MCU with great humor, sadness, character, action and story. I love the origin of Tony Stark and how he used to be a self-centered, greedy, playboy whose lost his way and doesn't realize it until he almost his killed by the weapons he makes. I love Pepper Potts a smart, business savvy secretary who while is often frustrated by Tony cares for him deeply and I love how they make each other better. I even like the villain Obidiah Stane whose acted great buy Jeff Bridges and I like the idea of friends/family who turn villainous later. The ending and the post credit scene of this movie are my favorite Marvel ending and post credit scenes out of all of them.

1.) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This movie was my number four pick for my favorite films of 2014. It has some of my favorite story elements and some of my favorite things in this movie, an interesting plot, great backstory, an interesting twist that changes the very foundation of a movie series (both Captain America and the MCU in general), great action, a great lead protagonist, great villains with Robert Redford's Alexander Pierce being one of my favorite villains in the MCU (a villain you could see yourself becoming), a great female character (Black Widow), great supporting characters (Falcon, Nick Fury), great moral complexity, and just great everything. I am so glad I never did a review for this movie because even in my Top ten for my favorite movies of the year I wasn't able to properly describe how good this movie is.The only thing I can say bad about it is the ending could have been done better instead of in a cliffhanger but overall the movie is near perfect and the reason I love the MCU.

That's my ranking of the MCU movies and come back tomorrow for hopefully the review for Age of Ultron.
