I know I missed the Friday editorial/column/rant which is a bad start to my new schedule but I had Drug and Alcohol prevention course for my driving test which took a lot of time and really killed me and I couldn't go see a movie this weekend so I'm squishing Friday and Sunday together this week. I know this is mainly a movie blog but the subtitle below the title is movies, movies and whatever else I like. 'Whatever else I like' includes Manga (along with Doctor Who, Agent Carter, comic books, regular books, and video games.)
So anyway on with the show. First what is Assassination classroom, which if you know what anime is like it's kind of insane (if extremely lovely.)
Assassination Classroom is a manga by Yusei Matsui. In Assassination Classroom one day seventy percent of the moon is destroyed permanently rendering it into a crescent by a yellow octopus creature with a smiley face, he threatens to do the same thing to earth in one years time and the worlds militaries and government can't do anything to stop him due to the fact he has a speed of Mach 20. The creature however gives them a chance to kill him if they let him teacher class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School in which he will give the students a chance to kill him. So the Students of the much disrespected delinquent 3-E class must kill the creature who they affectionately give the name Koro-sensei (a pun on Korosenai the Japanese word for unkillable) before graduation or else the planet is doomed, whoever manages to kill Koro-sensai will receive ten billion yen (eighty-three million U.S dollars.)
I've only made it towards the first two volumes of Assassination Classroom and I intend to catch-up but from what I've seen so far it is a really great manga. It's very funny, very likeable, very relatable and is very genuine. What it's basically about when you boil it down is about the teacher-student relationship and how important it is. Students need someone not to coddle them but to at the very least encourage them and comfort them especially when they don't see the potential in themselves or think they are alone. The teacher needs to know the student cares so they have reason to care. The teacher and student relationship is a very important thing that not many things talk about and it does it really well.
The manga is also incredibly charming and really funny just seeing the students and Koro-sensai interact is hysterical especially when they are trying to kill him. There's also some very witty dialogue and images that are just gust bustlingly hilarious. It has a good balance of charm and laughs and some very serious themes and messages.
Some of the characters are:
Koro-sensai is amazing. He's one part hilarious, one part charming, one part heart-warming and one part scary, just because Matsui makes you like and sympathize with Koro-sensai that doesn't mean he makes you forget this thing is going to destroy the earth unless the kids stop him yet he's still enjoyable to read about.
My favorite character is Nagisa Shiota who is one of the main students. He has what I like in characters he is very smart and kind but has a lot of flaws like he's very insecure, very shy and doesn't succeed all the time. He's very relatable and has a very real teenage mindset that a lot of people will appreciate. He's very optimistic and also very observant as he keeps a list of Koro-sensei's weaknesses and they come into play a lot in the series so far and they are also very funny plot points.
Another really cool character is Karma Akabane, a delinquent and in all honesty kind of a psychopath but on the other hand he has this disturbing but nice passion for what he does and does genuinely enjoys it, he's also very loyal and reliable to class 3-E and will be there for them no matter what which is very admirable. His relationship with Koro-sensei is also very funny but very endearing at times.
Tadaomi Karasuma is the government associated worker who becomes the P.E teacher and at first is presented as "the cool-type" but it's played more for laughs because he's so serious and cool when he becomes pissed which is hilarious and has a very interesting relationship with Koro-sensei. Irina Jelavic or Ms. Vich is very interesting a professional hit woman who becomes the language teacher, she's interesting because she's a bit annoying at first but in a short amount of time she becomes pretty entertaining and you do admire the fact she is pretty enthusiastic and dead set on killing Koro-sensei.
The other characters are very fun and very likeable and I'm in the middle of a field trip storyline where were getting a very interesting backstory on one of the female characters.
The art of the series is very good and matches the lighthearted tone of the story very well and all the characters look very unique from each other whether it's face shape, eye shape or hair style.
Now there are a few flaws with the series, everything has flaws that's the fact of life. The first one is I wish they had a few more prominent female characters besides Ms. Vich, there was Manami Okudo a shy, socially awkward girl with a passion for chemistry but she felt a little one-off and Yakiko Kanzaki whose backstory is currently getting revealed but before that we didn't get much on her, there's even a chapter where another character describes her personalities.
Another problem is besides the ones mentioned before (plus a friend of Nagisa's name Kaede) many of the other characters mainly a lot of the students feel like one-off characters so far in that once there backstory which are all so far done really well and a lot of people could relate to they sort of disappear into the background like Manami and Tomohito Sugino who had a very interesting story and a very relatable one but that got solved in one chapter and hasn't been really that prominent since. In fact you can say for the series sometimes pacing can be an issue sometimes too fast or sometimes too slow.
Now does that mean you shouldn't pick up assassination classroom. Hell no! It's still a great series with likeable characters, relatable story and good themes and messages and is just a lot of fun to read.
I give this series (SO FAR) an 8/10.
