Gone Girl review

Disclaimer: Their will be major spoilers in this review so watch the movie before reading this review. SPOILERS!SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

The book Gone Girl is a 2012 book about a women, Amy Elliot Dunne who goes missing and her husband Nick Dunne is blamed for it.  For the sake of the review I won't try to hard to compare it to the book. Now i was excited going into this film and when I came out I was very happy with the finale product and overall liked the movie. I do have my problems with the movie one of which is in the book but I will get to that later.

First David Fincher masterfully directs the film and in all honesty I think in anyone else's hands this could have been a disaster but he pulls it off spectacularly. The film is nice to look at with great cinematography and great direction. This the perfect example of a book adaptation changing a book enough to make the movie good but still keeps the themes of said book. The film itself is a good look at social media, the justice system, people's opinions and reactions to certain crimes, how to never judge a book by it's cover, perspective and even gender politics when we get to the twist.

The film however is slow in the first act of the film just before the twist takes place. Now this might be because I read the book but I think if I didn't read the book it would still be a problem because I wasn't gripped to the movie until the twist happened. After the twist it's where the movie starts really getting good, not because the twist its self it really good but because it makes the story more interesting and it makes sense. A good twist makes sense and makes everything more interesting where as a bad twist makes it less interesting or their for no reason other than shock.  For the second and third act I was gripped I wanted to know more and see how it ended.

The twist is, SPOILERS, Amy is a pathological liar and psychopath and faked her own disappearance to get back at Nick. This turns into the Amy story which was interesting, suspense full and Amy Dunn has to be one of the best villains of 2014 because despite being a psychotic monster is still actually kind of human and fun to watch. It's just interesting to see this women work and how she justifies all these things she's doing. If Rosamund Pike doesn't get an oscar nomination I will be both shocked and disappointed because she is really good in this film. Same with Ben Affleck as Nick Dunn, who is kind of a dumb jackass but you do sympathize him most times especially as the film goes on. Affleck is very subtitle in his role and makes the most of it.

Other people who did a really good job in it were Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris.  I love Neil Patrick Harris and despite being in their for a short time is so good and memorable in his role and is so creepy that I wish he took more villain roles, seriously throughout his tenure in the film I kept thinking he was going to murder Rosamund Pike's Amy Dunn.  Tyler Perry for once acts in a film and is so good and super likable in his performance, I'm not going to outright say best supporting actor for him but he is really good still. So Tyler Perry stop making Madea films and just work for David Fincher for now on.

Sadly another problem I have is that the ending of the film is the same in the movie, I won't spoil it but like the book it's not very satisfying which is sad especially how good the film was at that point and it felt almost as if they were no payoff.  Nothing to relive the built up tension. Also a problem for me was time because at first only days go by when it should have been weeks because it makes more sense that way.

I give this film an 8.5/10- Great film with problems of time, ending and the first act being too slow.
