Weekend box office preditction

Hey guys I'm not doing so well so this will be a short little piece and sorry it's coming a day late, the editorial will be moved to tomorrow as well. This weekend I am seeing and reviewing St. Vincent because I really wanted to see that film and it's finally coming to a theater close by to me. A new movie coming out tomorrow is Nightcrawler which I don't know much about other than Jake Gyllenhal is in it and he kind of has a funny voice.

Still here's what I think

Nightcrawler

Weekend box office:$11-$20 million
Domestic box office: $40-$55 million
International box office: $55-$57 million
World wide box office: $95-$112 million

Box office
1.) Ouji
2.) Night Crawler
3.) John Wick
4.) Fury
5.)Gone Girl
6.) Book of life
7.) Alexander and The T.N.G.V.B.D
8.) St. Vincent
9.) The best of me
10.) Dracula untold

That's my weekend box office prediction and see you tomorrow either about Marvel or something else.

Weekend box office~ Keanu Reeves plays with a Ouji boards

The weekend has come and gone and now it is time for the weekend box office, I didn't go to the movies this week (but expect a movie review this week.) Ouji and John Wick (which I had no idea existed) and guess who came out on top (clue: Halloween is five days away.)

Weekend box office
1.) Ouija- $19.8 million
2.) John Wick- $14 million
3.) Fury- $13 million
4.) Gone Girl- $11 million
5.) The book of life- $10 million
6.) St. Vincent- $7.7 million
7.) Alexander (and the title I refuse to write)- $ 7.1 million
8.) The Best of me- $ 4.6 million
9.) Dracula untold- $4.3 million
10.) The Judge- $ 4.3 million

So that's the weekend box office and I'm surprised John Wick did as well as it did I know the word of mouth is really good but Keanu Reeves has been box office poison for years which is good for him because that means he still has his career for the next few years.

Editorial- Avengers age of ultron trailer breakdown

Yesterday thanks to Hydra (this is why we love you Marvel!) leaked the Avengers age of ultron trailer, so Marvel released it officially. And it was awesome, now I am here to do a (written) trailer breakdown for the movie since it's so big.

Avengers age of ultron trailer breakdown

0:01-0:10~ Opening of a city where a riot seems to be taking place, at first I thought it was south Africa because of all the filming that has been taking place there until it shows some rioters with a French flag so this either takes place in Paris or some sort of French colony. Also if you look closely two of the rioters are Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch (A.K.A Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.) Also we get opening narration from James Spader Ultron who after hearing his voice is freaking perfect for the role.

0:14~ A robotic hand covered in lava most likely Ultron either being created or upgraded.

0:17~ Our first glance of Captain America in his new suit which I have to say looks very cool, he seems to be walking through a field of destruction in either the place where the trailer opened or south Africa and he looks tired.

0:19~ Our first glance of Hawkeye who is standing in the middle of a panic and seems to have had something catch his attention during all of this.

0:20~ Our first glance of Thor from the back.

0:22-0:24~ A full shot of the team minus Tony Stark and from the looks of it their coming back from a mission gone wrong. All of them look either upset or tired and none of them are facing each other. The most damaged out of all of them looks to be Bruce Banner who is wrapped in a blanket looking as though he is really scared.

0:26-0:30- Our first glance a Ultron, who looks beat to hell. We got some news earlier this year that Ultron throughout the film will be changing forms and from the looks of it the report was correct as we see here he looks more in line from a iron man legion drone where as at the end he looks more like he does from the comics. My theory is that the Avengers build him to cover jobs they can't do and where at the beginning he starts out as a mindless drone but over time gains a sense of emotions and something happens where he snaps and decides enough is enough.

0:32- Notice in the group shot from the party scene their are two other women in the shot besides black widow, my guess is that it's agent Maria Hill and the asian scientist that was cast six months ago in the film.

0:41-0:45~ My guess this is the rumored beginning part with them breaking into a Hydra base due to the European-transylvanian style of the castle in front of the mountain range the same one Iron man seems to be standing in front of (most likely the swiss alps.) You can also tell it's the same facility Cap kicks the door down in due to how the windows look.

0:46-0:47~ The military either fighting Ultron drones or like we are going to see later because of how the city looks them shooting the Hulk.

0:49~ From the looks of the hut and clothing style of the black woman this seems to be taking place in South Africa where they have been filming (Wakanda?)

0:50-0:53~ Bruce Banner running through the snowy forest looking scared and confused. This most likely takes place in the beginning of film along with the Hydra break in.

0:54~ Quick shot of Black Widow, they say Black widow will be having a larger part in this than before and will be exploring her backstory more and from the looks of it she seems to be questioning her place as she joined still to stop guys like Hydra only to find out she's been working for them this whole time.

0:55~ A surgery seems to be taking place and my best guess is Iron man.

0:56-0:59~ Ultron in a seemingly different form with the twins (Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch), I have the feeling in the beginning they will be evil but join the Avengers at the end.

1:00-1:02- These shots seem to be taking place in the same scene with the Ultron drones coming out of the water and the Avengers looking really surprised and overwhelmed as we see Thor drop his hammer.

1:06-1:10~ Our only lines of dialogue in this film are pretty grim with Tony saying this is his fault and Black Widow stating nothing last forever. We also see Nick Fury and it will be interesting to see what role he plays in this film.

1:11-1:14~ Scarlet Witch screaming up into the high heavens, in the comics one of Scarlett Witch's abilities is to control reality, it probably won't be like House of M type of stuff where she creates an alternate timeline but still she's probably going to be pretty powerful. I bring this up because it seems like from how the scene is shot almost dream like and it doesn't seem real like she is trapped into a hallucination.

1:16~ First real shot of Hulk and I have to say the CGI in this trailer alone looks way better than Hulk in the first Avengers,  in fact the entire film looks visually stunning from this trailer.

1:18~ The Hulkbuster armor looks awesome! Not going to say too much except already has talked about it.

1:22~ Black Widow on her new electric motorcycle which also looks cool

1:23-1:24~ A very small but very impressive look at Quicksilver's and Scarlett Witch's powers set, they look really cool and really colorful.

1:25~ This is interesting my train of thought is this is Cap under a hallucination by the Scarlett Witch in which Steve got his dance with Peggy because you can tell by the glimpse it is a dance hall of sorts but he is wearing his costume. Most likely to distract Cap to take him out of the fight while someone else (either Quicksilver or Vision, who we don't see) tries to kill him.

1:27~ Quick shot of Andy Serkis (favorite actor and cool to see him in live action) as most likely from the way his hair is style and overall look he is probably Uylsses Klaw a Black Panther villain: that is awesome if in the Black Panther movie Andy Serkis ends up being the villain that will be awesome for him. Uylsses Klaw is a physicist who specializes in sound, and since Black Panther is from Wakanda Klaw deals in vibranium the metal cap's shield is made out of and near the end it looks like they might need some soon.

1:30~ Rumors are circulating of Black Widow and Hulk romance in the film which I so hope happens. Mainly because when you think about it they would have a lot in common with both viewing themselves as monsters, both running from their past constantly and if you watch the first Avengers you kind of get a small vibe from them in certain scenes.

1:31~ A shot of a bunch of Ballerina's may not look like an important shot but if you know anything about Black Widow's origin and the fact this scene looks very dream/flashback like this will be very important.

1:32-1:33~ A bunch of what looks like Hydra agents shooting at Hawkeye (in a very nice looking new suit.) This is most likely in the beginning as well.

1:34-1:35~ Thor picks up Tony Stark looking ready to beat him up, something must have  happened to make Thor this angry and from the looks of this movie their will be a lot of rifts between a lot of Avengers.

1:36-1:44~ Pre-order you Avengers fighting game now!

1:48-1:49~ That is already an iconic shot of Cap's shield broken symbolizing that the Avengers are freaking screwed.

1:50-1:53~ God what a way to end a trailer on (most likely) the final form of Ultron with James Spader menacingly saying "No strings on me" (awesome music choice by the way.)

And that's it, awesome trailer and I can't wait for May to come next year. Maybe a netflix review tomorrow but no movie theater review tomorrow, have a good day.

Weekend box office prediction~ Netflix and Avengers

The Avengers age of ultron trailer leaked so looks like I know what I'm doing for my editorial tomorrow (no it will not be in video format, my computer is too broken for that. This weekend I'm going to be doing a NETFLIX movie review of something I haven't seen yet because I can't go to the movies this weekend for personal reasons, money reasons and the fact only Ouija is coming out.

OUIJA
Weekend box office: $26 million
Domestic box office: $45-$50 million
International box office: $40-$45 million
World wide box office: $ 85-$95 million

OK the premise of the movie kind of makes me raise an eyebrow. Why? Why would you use a Ouija board to talk to your dead friend from beyond the grave? Why would you WANT to talk to your friend beyond the grave for that matter? I don't know, it looks really stupid and I'm glad I can't afford to go this weekend.

Weekend box office
1.)Fury
2.)Gone Girl
3.) Ouija
4.) Book of life
5.) Alexander and the terrible no good very bad day
6.) The Best of me
7.) Dracula untold
8.) The Judge
9.) Annabelle
10.) The Equalizer

So that's my weekend box office prediction and tomorrow... AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON trailer breakdown.

Book of life review

Spoilers!I can't properly review this movie without spoiling pretty much all of it.

The book of life is an animated movie about a wager between La Muerte the ruler of the remembered and Xibalba ruler of the forgotten (basically rulers of heaven and hell if you want to get down to it), on one day of the dead celebration they make a wager of who a young girl named Maria will chose to fall in love with and marry the insecure musical Manolo or the good intention if a little arrogant war hero Joaquin. La Muerte watches over Manolo where as Xibalba watches over Joaquin (including giving him a medallion that lets him never die or get hurt.) However Maria seems to be leaning more towards Manolo then Joaquin so Xibalba cheats and kills Manolo who know with the help of his dead relatives must reclaim his life in order to get back to the love of his life.

I was really looking forward to this movie when it was coming out.

First off let me get to the good. This is a really funny movie but what I love about it as opposed to a lot of other animated movies or live-action movies is that the comedy does not get into the way of or interrupt the emotional serious moments of the film and they don't feel jarring, they feel very genuine and it's never too much. My favorite character in this movie also has to be Joaquin while he is an ass unlike others movie where they make that the only character trait the rival has Joaquin is very three-dimensional as while he truly loves Maria he doesn't want to marry her if she doesn't love him back, he just wants her to be happy and the relationship with Manalo is very genuine and heartfelt and he doesn't hate Manalo and is there for him always as a friend should.

This is easily one of the most visually beautiful and unique movies I've ever seen. The vibrant color choice really pops and the puppet like design for the characters are really interesting. It's very fluid and smooth and is just so pretty to look at. In fact a lot of the face designs reminded me of one of my favorite shows as a kid El Tigre (look it up it's really good) and when I looked it up the man who directed this movie, Jorge Guetierrez, created the show El Tigre. You can also see that the same people who made El Tigre made this film because like this film El Tigre was about choosing your own destiny and the power of free choice. Sadly though while the film is fun and pretty I would rather watch El Tigre than watch this film anytime soon.

It seems that most of the bad films I watch nowadays seem to have really bad script problems. First off let me get to the other characters, where as Joaquin is a nice change of pace for rivals in other movies the other characters are very one-dimensional. Manalo are main character is very much like his puppet design, very wooden, there's not much their really except for a really good singing voice and I couldn't really root for him because he wasn't that interesting. Maria the love interest while a lot of fun doesn't really have a lot to her either as a character and is really just the feminist girl archetype. Manalo and Maria also don't have that much chemistry either, they do end up together in the film but you don't buy until the credits start rolling and the film is over. They don't even talk in the film to each other when they are adults, they sing with each other about how much they love each other but they don't have a real conversation to make you buy that they are in love with each other, rather just the concept of being in love.

In fact I thought she had more chemistry with Joaquin because at least they have a conversation with each other and he seems to love her for who she is as a person. Wouldn't have it been more interesting if while all that stuff about in the land of the dead with Manolo was happening Maria and Joaquin got to know each other better and eventually fell genuinely in love with each other. With the whole film about letting go of someone dead or alive and that you move on no matter what. That's kind of dark I know but it would have been interesting to see an animated movie tackle that.

Most of the other characters are one-dimensional, La Muerte and Xibalba are a lot of fun but we don't really know them and I wish we did because they seem really interesting with cool designs but they are kind of just there. Most of the voice acting is pretty good except for Ice Cube as the candle maker (basically god), he is so jarring in this film whenever he opened his mouth I wanted to groan and slit my throat. This film is very racially sensitive which is awesome and I like the mostly Hispanic cast which is even better but Ice Cube voicing a character with the candle makers design felt kind of uncomfortable. If you see the movie you'll know what I mean when he shows up.

Another problem with the movie it follows a pretty predictable story path when it has an interesting concept. Which is sad because you can pretty much guess the ending of this movie without even blinking. Nothing new happens, nothing interesting happens when you have a film about deities messing with human lives, that should be interesting. That's probably the worst part of the movie is a lot of potential is wasted, if they had hired different screenwriters this would probably have been good.

This film coming off of that point is very bloated, by that I mean this movie has four different GOOD movies in it that are all basically bull-fighting for attention creating this bloody mess that could have been avoided. I have a feeling the script for this movie was rewritten a lot because it feels like five different movies are happening at once. Their's of course the love triangle part of the movie but also a story about how Manolo wants to be a guitar player rather than a bull fighter (I can't spell the politically correct term for bull fighter), Manolo being afraid to be himself and a plot about Joaquin and an infamous bandit. All these plots could stand as a movie on it's own but put together they don't mesh that well because with how this movie is structure it's very jarring and unlike the animation doesn't flow well together.

The main theme these all share however is the idea of free choice as opposed to destiny. Yet I think it doesn't really work that well. What made the freedom versus destiny story work in El Tigre is the main character Manny Rivera (who is way more interesting that Manolo)  always had free choice as an option, while he did have his dad and grandpa forcing him to choose it was always up to Manny to decide what to do, in this movie because you bring in gods into the movie one of whom has been manipulating one of the main characters free choice is kind of void. Not many of the characters have free choice really in this film either. Sure in the third act they say Manolo can make up his own destiny but it's so rushed through and never discussed. The pace in this movie is also a big problem which factors into the rushing of Manolo being able to make his own choice.

I give this film a 5/10- I can watch this film for entertainment and visual value but it's just so bad and so disappointing considering how hyped I was from this film.

Weekend box office prediction- Best fury of life

Another day, another week and another weekend box office. I am doing this a day early because of some extracurricular things for school which will take up a lot of tomorrow night. Anyway this week three big movies are coming out Fury (Brad pit Oscar baiting to the max), Book of life (It looks really cool and really pretty), and the Best of me (I hate you Nicholas Sparks.)

  So heres my prediction:

Fury
Weekend box office: $ 38-$45 million
Domestic box office: $ 85-$91 million
International box office: $110-$120 million
World wide box office: $195-$211 million
Oscar Awards season is finally here with Fury to kick it off, If I'm right they might have just given away their ending in the trailers (go watch or wait- don't go watch the trailers if you want to be surprised.) It looks ok, it seems really Oscar baiting though with the WWII setting, the seemingly dramatic turn from Pitt, the speech he gives in the trailer and everything. On the bright side the fight scenes with the Tanks seems like it will be at least entertaining to watch.

The Book of Life
Weekend box office: $ 35-$50 million
Domestic box office: $ 76-$90 million
International box office: $ 90-$140 million
Worldwide box office: $166-$230 million

With the pretty interesting (and pretty dark one at that) premise and interesting visual style I am really looking forward to seeing this animated movie,  I love animation be it 2-D, 3-D,claymation, anything as long as it looks good and doesn't pander to its' audience.

The Best of Me
Weekend box office: $ 14-$25 million
Domestic box office: $ 30-$70 million
International box office: $ 30-$50 million
World wide box office: $ 60-$110 million

I would rather watch Garbage pail kids hung upside down over a bed of sharks than watch a Nicholas Sparks movie. I have the feeling that the romantic genre is in one of its lags so this movie does have a chance of bombing which despite that fact I hate Nicholas Sparks movies and books I do like James Marsden as an actor and at the very least Nicholas Sparks movies have pretty visuals and interesting (if convoluted) subplots.

Weekend box office
1.) Fury
2.) Gone Girl
3.) The Book of life
4.) Dracula untold
5.) Alexander and the terrible no good very bad day
6.) The best of me
7.) The Judge
8.) The Equalizer
9.) Addicted
10.) The Maze Runner

So that's my weekend box office prediction, so see you all Monday for some sort of editorial. Have a nice night!

Weekend box office- David Fincher Wins again

Monday is here sadly so that means the weekend box office is officially out. David Fincher has won the weekend again which is very much deserved. Despite Dracula untold coming in second place the film still made a shit ton of money so Universal's monsters cinematic universe is very much a go, lets see how the next film goes. Now lets see how the rest of the weekend did.

   Weekend box office
1.) Gone Girl- $26 million
2.) Dracula untold- $23 million
3.) Alexander and the terrible no good very bad day- $ 18 million
4.) Annabelle- $ 15 million
5.) The Judge- $ 13 million
6.) The Equalizer- $ 9 million
7.) Addicted- $ 7.48 million
8.) The Maze Runner- $7.46 million
9.) The Box trolls- $ 6 million
10.) Left behind- $2 million

That's the weekend box office, I'll do the weekend box office prediction tomorrow because I have certain things to do for Wednesday night, Thursday an editorial and Friday a movie review for The Book of life. Have a nice day.

The Judge review

Spoilers! I mean I will spoil this movie completely so go watch it and come back!

Judge is a movie starring Robert Downy JR. as Henry "Hank" Palmer who is a hot-shot bends the rule asshole judge who gets word that his mother has died and returns home to his golden-child brother Glenn, his mentally-challenged brother Dale and his father the strict but compassionate Judge Joseph Palmer who is played by Robert Duvall. Hank and Judge don't along too well, they borderline hate each other (it's more on Downy's part than Duvall) because of the fact that when Hank was younger he was a delinquent and Judge sent him to juvenile detention center even when he only could have just done community service hours (Yeah he's the tough, tough, tough love kind of parent.)

Yet now his father has killed someone and now he has to defend his father in the process getting their relationship back in order.

I really liked this movie for a lot of reasons. First off Downy and Duvall, Downy is amazing with his return to dramatic form and it's awesome, I love Downy and not just because he's Iron man and is good at it, but watch stuff like kiss, kiss bang bang and Chaplin he is an amazing dramatic actor that some people forget he can be. Duvall is also amazing in this movie as while he is super serious and strict you can still see the compassionate and honorable man he is so while in some scenes you can dislike him for some of the things he's done you can never hate him because he's so good and sympathetic. This movie also has a lot of good side character performances, such as Jeremy Strong as Dale, I bought him as mentally challenged without it coming off as fake or too much.

I also like this is a morally gray film overall because while it's revealed that due to cancer and the grief of loosing his wife Judge did still kill the the guy and even the victim himself was not totally innocent so you are left to decide whether or not Judge should go to jail and I like a film that takes it's audience and lets them decide what was right whether or not Judge should be punished. This is also a thing Robert Downy JR's character had to decide whether or not his father was innocent or not add to the fact it's his FATHER who he is also defending. I loved that part of the movie.

I also like how the opposing lawyer played by Billy Bob Thorton is not painted as a douchebag bad guy rather as someone who just wants to see what he believes as a murder go to jail and for the victims family to get their justice.

I also like unlike other films where the feuding father and son they're all buddies and love each other at the end, in this by the end while their relationship is way better and stronger you get the impression their are things that just won't heal between these two and some things will never be OK. Which is sad but natural at the same time.

This movie was also shot really well and has very beautiful scenery and lighting effects. OK that's all I loved about the film what don't I like about this film that's keeping me from totally loving it.

In the film they do the whole old-highschool-manic-pixie-dream-girl-girlfriend trope, the one where he meets up with his old high school sweetheart and falls in love with her again, and it's really boring and it really distracts from the plot and does not make sense overall. They also do a thing where he thinks he's the father of the women's daughter (who looks like she could be her sister because of how old the actress playing the girlfriend looks) and it turns out he's not so it really pointless. If they had cut those parts out completely and just focused on the Hank and Judge relationship this would be a total best picture winner movie but this subplot drags it down so hard it keeps it from doing it's very best.

I also wished the fleshed out the Glenn Brother (who is played by Vincent De'nafrio the new king pin for all the Daredevil fans) who they put a major emphasis on but doesn't get fleshed out to well except for one or two scenes. I also wished they fleshed out what happened with his ex-wife because while they do tell us why they split they never show it. I also would have edited the first five minutes of this film before he comes homes because it feels really abrupt and misplaced.

I give this film a 8.5/10- Interesting characters, cool main story and interesting moral dilemmas but just do a better editing job and cut out that stupid subplot.

Editorial- Fantastic Four Doomed?

Recently the long publishing (75 years) comic book The Fantastic Four was announced to be getting either cancelled or discontinued soon. Either way no more Marvel's first family. Now this "coincidentally" will happen right around when the new Fantastic four reboot movie is coming out. Which thanks to bad publicity or no publicity and the stars of said movie either not knowing when to keep quiet or at the very least word their statements carefully seems to be written off as a "don't watch" movie before the first trailer hits (and I won't lie when I say I'm kind of in the "Hell No" movie camp.)

I came here to talk about this whole Fantastic Four in general. It seems that despite being the first Stan Lee Marvel creation and the start to Marvel comics Fantastic Four tends to come with a stench of no good from it. What do I mean by that?

Well they've never had a legitimately good movie ever come out (Richard Coreman's Fantastic Four, the 2004 Fantastic Four and the Fantastic four rise of the silver surfer), the comics have not been selling well nor have they've been well-received (try reading one of the comics nowadays and not feel like you took some bad acid.) The only real luck Marvel's first family had was in animation but their has been no new cartoon and the last one got cancelled before it's time was up.

So yeah Fantastic Four as of late is having a really bad track record... but does that mean it's doomed? Doomed to one day fade into obscurity... to be a thing of the past... a thing to be replaced.

In my opinion Yes and No.

What I mean is that yeah with the comics being taken away and the less likely chance for the movies to improve when it comes to today it will fade... for a while. Their is a reason that Fantastic Four has been around for nearly seventy-five years because the first family has managed to captivate the imaginations of children from around the world. With Mr. Fantastic's mind, the Thing's weirdness, Invisible Women's heart and Human Torch's charm they will never really die and be forgotten. A lot of the writers in the comic book industry grew up reading comics and who knows maybe a previous fan of the Fantastic four will return the team to it's once great form and restore the legacy.

That's the big thing with the Fantastic Four legacy, yes the legacy is pretty tainted but with memorable heroes and villains (Dr. Doom, Galactus, Annilus etc.) and an ever changing stories the Fantastic Four may wane they will never be doomed!

weekend box office prediction: God back to nothing

Yeah sorry this is coming a day late... again.... ok lets get this show on the road. Today is the start of New York comic con but no I am not covering this because I do not have the time as I have school plus debate and I have a competition coming up. Anyway nothing note-worthy is really coming out except for the Judge (which I hope to see.) Other than that their is Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day (I've read the book, how the heck to do you manage to make a 90-minute movie of that), and Dracula untold (can we go back to traditional Dracula?)

 Here's my prediction:

The Judge
Weekend box office: $18-$25 million
Domestic box office: $45-$50 million
International box office: $ 70-$90 million
World wide box office: $ 135- $140 million

This seems more of a Oscar-bait movie then a make a lot of money movie. Still great cast and a return to dramatics for Downey J.R which gets me excited and so I am overall looking forward to it.

Alexander and the terrible, no good, very bad day

Weekend box office: $18-$23 million
Domestic box office: $ 30- $56 million
International box office: $ 35- $60 million
World wide box office: $ 65-$116 million

Really Hollywood were you this desperate? It's been a really long time since I read the book for this but even still I remember it being at most only twenty pages long, so how the heck do you convert this to a ninety-minute movie, I haven't seen the trailers for this so I don't know if it's just Alex or from the looks of it from the posters I've seen his family and him having the bad day. I also don't expect this to make a lot of money since while some people do like it, these childhood book adaptations don't have a good track record (I'm looking at you Judy Moody and the not bummer summer.)

Dracula Untold
Weekend box office: $ 15-$25 million
Domestic box office: $ 35-$50 million
International box office: $ 70-$95 million
World wide box office: $ 105- $ 145 million

This looks like the dumbest movie in the world and I feel bad for universal because this is supposed to be the start to their cinematic monster movie universe which they might want to rethink. I do expect however to see this movie make more money internationally than domestically though.

Weekend box office
1.) Gone Girl
2.) Annabelle
3.) The Judge
4.) Alexander and the terrible, no good, very bad day
5.) The Equalizer
6.) The Box trolls
7.) The Maze Runner
8.) Left behind
9.) This is where I leave you
10.) Dolphin Tale 2

That's my prediction for the weekend box office movie review and editorial tomorrow and for my editorial... Fantastic Four!

Weekend box office: Girls who play with dolls

So the weekend comes and goes, and we review the how much money other people have made. Kind of said considering I only make two cents a month on this thing but it's still fun. This week gone girl (which I really liked) came out along with Annabelle (I ended up not seeing that this week) and it was actually a fairly close race between the two.

Weekend box office
1.) Gone Girl- $ 37.5 million
2.) Annabelle- $ 37.1 million
3.) The Equalizer- $18 million
4.) The Boxtrolls- $11.9 million
5.) The Maze Runner- $ 11.6 million
6.) Left behind- $6.3 million
7.) This is where I leave- $ 4 million
8.) Dolphin Tale 2- $ 3.4 million
9.)Guardians of the galaxy- $3 million
10.) No Good Deed- $ 2 million

That's probably the closet I've ever seen for number 1 at the box office ever and it's astounding, it makes me wonder if these two movies hadn't opened on the same day how much they would have made. Anyway that's the weekend box office and hopefully these post become more on time.

Gone Girl review

Disclaimer: Their will be major spoilers in this review so watch the movie before reading this review. SPOILERS!SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

The book Gone Girl is a 2012 book about a women, Amy Elliot Dunne who goes missing and her husband Nick Dunne is blamed for it.  For the sake of the review I won't try to hard to compare it to the book. Now i was excited going into this film and when I came out I was very happy with the finale product and overall liked the movie. I do have my problems with the movie one of which is in the book but I will get to that later.

First David Fincher masterfully directs the film and in all honesty I think in anyone else's hands this could have been a disaster but he pulls it off spectacularly. The film is nice to look at with great cinematography and great direction. This the perfect example of a book adaptation changing a book enough to make the movie good but still keeps the themes of said book. The film itself is a good look at social media, the justice system, people's opinions and reactions to certain crimes, how to never judge a book by it's cover, perspective and even gender politics when we get to the twist.

The film however is slow in the first act of the film just before the twist takes place. Now this might be because I read the book but I think if I didn't read the book it would still be a problem because I wasn't gripped to the movie until the twist happened. After the twist it's where the movie starts really getting good, not because the twist its self it really good but because it makes the story more interesting and it makes sense. A good twist makes sense and makes everything more interesting where as a bad twist makes it less interesting or their for no reason other than shock.  For the second and third act I was gripped I wanted to know more and see how it ended.

The twist is, SPOILERS, Amy is a pathological liar and psychopath and faked her own disappearance to get back at Nick. This turns into the Amy story which was interesting, suspense full and Amy Dunn has to be one of the best villains of 2014 because despite being a psychotic monster is still actually kind of human and fun to watch. It's just interesting to see this women work and how she justifies all these things she's doing. If Rosamund Pike doesn't get an oscar nomination I will be both shocked and disappointed because she is really good in this film. Same with Ben Affleck as Nick Dunn, who is kind of a dumb jackass but you do sympathize him most times especially as the film goes on. Affleck is very subtitle in his role and makes the most of it.

Other people who did a really good job in it were Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris.  I love Neil Patrick Harris and despite being in their for a short time is so good and memorable in his role and is so creepy that I wish he took more villain roles, seriously throughout his tenure in the film I kept thinking he was going to murder Rosamund Pike's Amy Dunn.  Tyler Perry for once acts in a film and is so good and super likable in his performance, I'm not going to outright say best supporting actor for him but he is really good still. So Tyler Perry stop making Madea films and just work for David Fincher for now on.

Sadly another problem I have is that the ending of the film is the same in the movie, I won't spoil it but like the book it's not very satisfying which is sad especially how good the film was at that point and it felt almost as if they were no payoff.  Nothing to relive the built up tension. Also a problem for me was time because at first only days go by when it should have been weeks because it makes more sense that way.

I give this film an 8.5/10- Great film with problems of time, ending and the first act being too slow.

Editorial- New Age Movie Dream

This week news broke (in a particularly slow news month) that Christopher Nolan will be releasing his new film Interstellar two days early on film. Not Digital but real film the black film reel you can hold in your hand: "real film."

Christopher Nolan is very much the type that wants to preserve film, as do many other filmmakers such as J.J Abrams and Quentin Tarantino. Now I can understand why these men would like to preserve real, able to hold film. Just like I can understand the use of practical effects over CG effects. Practical effects look way better than CG effects and movies do look better on film than on Digital. Yet after seeing a movie like Gravity which was shot digitally with clearly a lot CG effects it made me wonder when will that line between film/digital film and practical/CG effects will become much more blurred or at the very least the same.

Digital filming and CG effects have come along way and while we are far from reaching a point where the line does become blurred (I still hate CG skies when they are unnecessary) we have gotten a lot better with CG effects when used properly. Now people will bring up things like the Star Wars prequels, the hobbit trilogy or Green lantern but I ask to look at films such as Gravity, the rebooted planet of the apes movies, Jurassic park, The Maze Runner & even Interstellar itself which uses a lot of CG too. CG effects used properly can look just as real as practical effects. CG effects will only advance and in the next ten or twenty years expect them to get so good to the point of where we really don't need practical effects anymore.

Now on the note of Digital filming that has gotten a lot better as time passes. That's the thing about all of this- time. As time goes on and more technological advances are made the use of real film and practical effects become smaller, because that's the way our future is heading. Heck in twenty or so years just watching films as we know it will change. More people stream stuff online or at home then they do flip on a channel or go to the movies. Recently Adam Sandler made a deal with netflix to make four movies which in all honesty more people would stay at home and see that than go at and pay twenty bucks to see his movies. So in a few years real film will become not really that practical anymore.

Yet the question is, is it practical now?

Looking at it now, not really. I think digital film making has advance passed CG effects more comfortably and now a days people can hardly tell the difference between the two. I know I barely tell anymore. While I get his nostalgia for film, nostalgia for anything has it's down sides as not being able to have things change and move forward which from the looks of things might be soon.

That's my two cents on the matter and tomorrow expect a review of Gone Girl (Saw it, liked it, too tired to right anything now, see you later.)

Weekend box office prediction- Gals & Dolls

So two big movies are coming out this weekend Gone Girl (guaranteed will be seeing and reviewing) and Annabelle (maybe I might catch it if I want to do a second review.) I think a third movie was suppose to come out but I cant remember what it was since Gone Girl and Annabelle is what everyone's been talking about.

Gone Girl prediction
Weekend box office: $ 45-$55 million
Domestic box office: $ 150-$160 million
International box office: $ 170-$ 200 million
World wide box office: $320-$360 million

Gone Girl's been highly anticipated by both Fincher fans and fans of the book and I am personally really excited to see it. The reviews have been great so far but still fingers crossed!

Annabelle
Weekend box office: $20-$35 million
Domestic box office: $ 65-$75 million
International box office: $ 75-$95 million
Worldwide box office: $ 140-$170 million

I kind of want to see this because I loved the Conjuring so much but the fact it's not James Wan, it looks more jump scares than suspense and honestly not as good. Yet still positive for it so maybe if I get a chance to see two movies in one weekend.

World wide box office
1.) Gone Girl
2.) The Equalizer
3.) Annabelle
4.) The Maze Runner
5.) Box trolls
6.) This is where I leave you
7.) Dolphin tale 2
8.) No Good Deed
9.) A walk among the tombstones
10.) Guardians of the galaxy

So that's my weekend box office prediction and either later or tomorrow.... film!
