Yeah I literally had no idea what to do for this week and this is coming out a day late so yeah... Anyway since I don't really have a life besides this and school I tend to either play video games or check out movies on netflix and since I am late as it is I'll be putting up a top five recommendation list for movies you might want to check out on netflix (and mini-reviews with them.)
5.) Death of a superhero
It's kind of strange to see that "Kids-with-cancer" is a genre in movies now and Death of a superhero might just be the best one. While I do like the fault in our stars I couldn't get that emotionally invested in the characters because of how slightly cheesy it is, well what death of a superhero does is take out the cheese factor to it. The film is about a young man named Donald who wants to get laid before he dies of cancer. That might sound like a "eh" premise but it is way better and a long of that is carried on the writing and the performance of Thomas Brodie-Sangster who turns in a very genuine and real performance that completely carries the movie.
4.) The Hours
Take a film that revolves (but not about) Virgina Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, put Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep in it and you've got yourself a very good movie. While I don't know if I technically "liked" The hours but it is a fascinating film to watch and has interesting character studies for Moore, Kidman and Streep characters all of whom are interesting. Also it is very fascinating to watch Nicole Kidman look so unlike herself I did not think that was actually her at first.
3.) Gods and Monsters
Again another character study about interesting characters, and I overall think I liked this more then the hours. It helps that one of my favorite actors Ian Mckellen is in this and it's also better for a movie to have either Ian Mckellen or John Goodman in a movie. This is a film about the final days of director James Whale who directed the original black and white frankenstein and frankenstein bride, I don't know if this movie is completely factual but it's still a good movie that lives primarily on Ian Mckellen.
2.) Annie Hall
Their is a reason people call this their favorite Woody Allen movie. Annie Hall is a very realistic yet charming and loving movie that pulls at the heart strings but even if you don't want to be sad by the end of it, the movie is amazingly funny with memorable and gust busting jokes.
1.) What Maisie Knew
One of my new favorite movies Maisie knew is about a six year old going through her parent's divorce and yes it is as horribly depressing movie as it sounds. Yet it is an amazing movie with great acting from our young lead and makes me want more movies based around young children going through stuff. Also a really good performance from Julianne Moore who plays her hooked on a drug rockstar mom.
So that is my top Netflix picks and hopefully the next editorial comes out cleaner than this although I might do more If I watch enough movies on netflix. Hopefully I informed the three people reading this some pretty awesome movies to check out and I hope you appreciate it. Anyway see you next time.

Weekend box office prediction
Ok I seem to be getting on a sort of schedule now so that's good, September in Hollywood land tends to be the dead zone for movies. Hollywood tends to section it's movies off into seasons with late spring and all of summer being "blockbuster season" while the months of October to December tend to be what's considered Oscar season, with months like January and September being dead zone season where the worse of worst usually come out. Summer is over so technically blockbuster season is over but it's not yet oscar season yet so looks like it's going to be B-movie season for a bit.
Only two movies of any sort of attention worth paying are November man and As above so below (worst movie title ever!) I don't know whether I'll be reviewing these movies or movies that came out a week or two ago. Anyway here's my box off prediction for them anyway.
November Man
Weekend box office: $5-10 million
Domestic box office: $20-35 million
International box office: $35-$50 million
Worldwide box office: $ 55-85 million
Yeah... November man's probably going to bomb hardcore, I and I think a lot of people are getting sick of the old man action hero trope that seems to be on the knife's edge of running itself into the ground as a genre. I know Liam Neeson will always work but yeah for Pierce Bronson who the last movie where I can remember him staring in was Mama Mia (when did that come out anyway 2006 or 2007?)
As above so below (WHO TITLED THIS???)
Weekend box office: $15-$20 million
Domestic box office: $30-50 Million
International box office: $50-$70 million
Worldwide box office: $80-$120 million
Coming away from the title (was Catacombs or Caverns so hard?) While I know their are a lot of people sick of the found footage gimmick but this still has a audience and they will come out to support all of this.
Weekend box office list
1.) Guardians of the galaxy
2.) Teenage mutant ninja turtles
3.)As above so below
4.) Let's be cops
5.) November man
6.) If I stay
7.) When the game stands tall
8.) Expendables 3
9.) Sin City a dame to kill for
10.) The Giver
So that's the weekend box office and I set up a bit (tiny bit) more professional twitter page for this blog specifically. So tomorrow is my editorial and expect... something.

Weekend box office- Marvel kicks ass, Robert Rodriquez gets kicked in the ass
So Guardians of the galaxy took #1 again thats really cool, I thought sin city would take first place due to nostalgia factor but I never stopped it was going to be a bomb nor this bad. Just goes to show you how much time can affect a movie franchise especially when it takes almost ten years for that one to come out. Any here is the weekend box office:
Weekend box office
1.) Guardians of the galaxy- $ 17.2 million
2.) Teenage mutant ninja turtles- $ 16.7 million
3.) If I stay- $15 million
4.) Lets be cops- $8 million
5.) When the game stands tall- $8.3 million
6.) Expendables 3- $ 6.4 million
7.) The Giver- $6.3 million
8.) Sin city a dame to kill for- $6.3 million
9.)The hundred foot journey- $ 5.3 million
10.) Into the storm- $3 million
So that's the weekend box office and I don't really have that much to say other than the fact I am surprised that When the game stands tall made eight million dollars. So Wednesday box office prediction and thursday... some sort of editorial, I'll have to check twitter for an idea (It seems whenever I check twitter something bad always happens.)

The Giver movie review
Disclaimer: Spoilers
I think everyone in the small country known as America was forced to read 1994 book "The Giver" by Lois Lowery. Unlike most of my classmates I actually liked the book. And like people who liked the book I was not looking forward to the movie because the trailers made it look like a botched version of it. Now I am getting it out of the way now in saying that overall I liked the movie but at the same time this is not the best movie to come out this year but it's certainly not the book. And while most of my problems due involve the third act which is new it's not because it diverges from the book and I have no problems with most of the changes made to the movie adaptation. This movie isn't a piece of shit like you've been hearing and doesn't deserve the 32% on rotten tomatoes, overall this is half of a good movie which is why it's painful that the other half is pretty bad.
I will however have to compare this movie to the book because when you have an adaptation that you've actually read you can't not do that.
First the good, probably the best part of this movie is the visuals and how cleverly they use them. It's a gorgeous movie and has great cinematography. They use of black and white in the beginning is very clever along with the fact of how they slowly return the color as the movie goes on and when they drop it when Jonas leaves the community. Another plus and this is mostly on me is that there was a lot of passion thrown into this movie you could tell that the people making this movie really wanted to make a good movie (which is kind of sad I think this is only half a good movie.) Jeff Bridges has been trying to make this movie for years and I hope he likes it. A problem I had with one-hundred foot journey is that there was no passion behind, so this movie does get bonus points for that at least.
A lot of other critics who don't like this movie says that it completely misses the point of the source material and I don't think that is the case. I think this is overall a well written movie that understands it's material. I think it's more of something else that makes the movie go down a lot of pegs.
Now for the bad. The movie is horrendously acted, in the movie they play it very robotic and dead and while at first it didn't bother me because this was before Jonas was given memories from the giver, after the point Jonas starts skipping his injections I started to realize the acting problem. First let me start with the guy who plays Jonas, Brendan Thwaites, the dude while cute can't act for shit. I've seen him in supporting roles in other movies where he was fine but as the lead he can't carry a movie. This is a prime example of actors who while good in supporting roles can't transition to leading actors.
I know Jeff Bridges is an academy award winning actor and he is super likable in all of the things I've seen him in he hasn't really shown any range. And when he speaks of stuff like love and compassion it never translates to his facial expressions, in fact for any actor (except Meryl Streep) all the things they speak of never transitions to their faces. The whole thing was all the people were substance less in the book but they weren't dead inside. So I never felt any emotional connection for anyone in this movie except for Meryl Streep who was playing an emotionally stunted person but still showed the pain of that.
I think the reason a lot of the substance isn't there is because the acting isn't there. And it's not because of direction it's the actors themselves (Alexander Skarsgard and Katie Holmes are two of the best examples, they are likable in movies but neither are strong actors to do these types of roles.)
Also Brendan Thwaites and Odeya Rush (who can't act at all) who plays Fiona have no chemistry and you never get why he loves her except for maybe he wants to have sex with her. Brandan Thwaites has technically more chemistry with Jeff Brides (Giver and Receiver jokes hahaha.) Taylor Swift is also in this movie and when you just hear her voice for the first time it's cringe worthy.
Another bad part is the third act which is mostly action. Now I am not made because it diverges from the book, what gets me is that the first two thirds are so dialogue heavy that the last third which is really action heavy doesn't fit tonally with this movie and it's distracting, the third act really also shows the worst of the acting in this movie and pisses away a lot of the good will the first two acts built up for me.
I have a feeling the third act and romance were very much studio mandated to appeal to the teen demographic not realizing the reason this movie is bombing is because of the fact that the advertisement showed these two things off the most in the trailers and pissed a lot of people off.
All in all I give this a 5/10~ half a good movie that could have been way better if they had gotten different actors but it I still like due to the first two acts and the amount of passion thrown into this.

Box office prediction- teen romance, cliches and Noire
Yeah, school'sbeen freaking a mess with schedules so these blog posts will be sparsely updated and might be a bit short for a while. This weekend Sin city: a dame to kill for, If I stay ( probably the movie I might be seeing), and when the game stands tall (the most cliched looking movie in then world.) These are my box office predictions:
If I stay
Weekend: $17-25 million
Domestic box office: $60-$75 million
International box office: $70-$89 Million
Worldwide box office: $130- $ 164 million
This year Teen novel adaptations have been doing overall very well (the giver is sadly the red-headed step child of the bunch.) So I imagine this will do very well in its first weekend but start to slide in the coming weekend when the audience is not there anymore.
Sin city a dame to kill for
Weekend box office: $35- $55 million
Domestic box office: $ 100-$150 million
International box office: $ 150- 350 million
Worldwide box office: $250- $ 500 million
If this movie had come out two or three years after the first sin city had come out I think I would have gone a lot higher in my box office prediction for the weekend but because so much time has between this movie and the previous sin city (about seven years) I think it will land overall very soft. Though this movie seems like it will clean up well internationally though.
If the game stands tall
weekend box office: $10- $14 million
Domestic box office: $ 30-$50 million
International box office: $ 50- $80 million
Worldwide box office: $80- $130 million
If the game stands tall is one of those movies where you can tell this movie will be bad just from the trailer alone. It looks like the most cliched movie ever made and the trailers are unintentionally hilarious. I expect this movie not to do well at all.
Weekend box office list

6.) the expendables 3

weekend box office- Michael Bay blows up The expendables
I need to make this quick because I have homework and it's getting late. The weekend passed and the studio that owns the expendables franchise might want to think twice before green lighting a fourth expendables movie.
Weekend box office
1.) Teenage mutant ninja turtles- $ 28.5 million
2.) Guardians of the galaxy- $ 25.1 million
3.) Lets be cops- $ 17.8 million
4.) The expendables 3- $ 15.8
5.) The Giver- $12.3 million
6.) Into the storm- $ 7.8 million'
7.) The hundred foot journey- $ 7.1 million
8.) Lucy- $ 5.4 million
9.) Step up all in- $ 2.6 million
10.) Hercules- $2.2 million
Poor Sylvester Stallone. The failure of expendables could be because of the leak, the fact of how big of the backlash was to the PG-13 rating, that now families would go see it etc. Anyway sorry this is so short I am busy with school. Have a good day.

One-hundred foot journey review
I'm back! After moving I had to change my cable and Wi-Fi so no Wi-Fi until yesterday night. So hopefully things will return back to normal but I start school again on Monday so no promises. Anyway yesterday I saw One-hundred foot journey, a movie produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Helen Mirren as one of the leads. And directed by the guy who made one of my favorite movies "What's eating Gilbert Grape." What could go wrong!
Well.... I didn't like it, I didn't completely hate but I didn't like it. It's not a god awful movie and I cant legitimately call it a bad movie. It's a serviceable movie, it ok but if you wanted something more then you won't get it because theirs not much there.
The film is about the Haji family who after they lose their previous restaurant and the mom dies due to political reasons (I'll get to that later.) They buy a restaurant directly across a restaurant owned by Helen Mirren (one of my favorite actresses and is a badass in anything she does.) And of course chaos ensues but in the end through the love of food they come together.
It's not the most clichéd movie out there (cough *expendables 3* cough), but it is still a by the numbers Oscar bait movie. Yet that isn't the movies biggest problem.
The biggest pet peeves for me was context and time. I typically don't care when a movie takes place and I typically like it better when you can't tell when this movie is taking place. However when you do that the movie has to keep a consistent time frame, this movie is so inconsistent in time that it is extremely distracting. Through some parts of the movie it seems as though it's taking place in either the 60's or the 70's yet in other parts it seems like it takes place in modern day especially in the third act when the main character goes to Paris and it seems like it takes place in 2014. Also the fact that in some cases a year will go by that seems like either a few days or five years. This movie has no sense of time and it's distracting because you shouldn't be focusing on that.
Now that is only time now what about context. Well the whole beginning the mother got killed during a political riot but it comes out of nowhere and is never mentioned again. And I thought it would be considering the fact that their would be some racial tensions coming from the Haji family movie their. That's another thing is that they hand wave the racism that would realistically come up because of this. They mayor mentions some stuff but you never see any of it and it's more tell then show. They do some things with one of Helen Mirren's chefs but he never comes back. This is based on a book and I have never read the book so it might actually bring up a lot of racial problems that would come up no matter what time this movie takes place in.
Like in the where the movie doesn't know when it wants to take place in, the movie has a very inconsistent tone problems. Some scenes it wants to be a serious drama, other scenes it wants to be a borderline comedy and the thing is a movie can be both dramatic and serious (Dramadies) but to me anyway it was really inconsistent.
The biggest problem with the movie though is that to make a reference to the movie is that it's soulless. The movie is mind-numbingly passion-less. None of the actors are bad but they never make a splash with you, even the setting is "ehh" at best and this movie takes place in Paris so it should be goddam beautiful. Again it's not the most clichéd movie ever (cough *book thief* cough) but theirs nothing too it, with "What's eating Gilbert Grape" you could tell the director
Lasse Hallstorm had passion for it and it was something unique and memorable. That's why so many people love Darron Arronofsky, while sometimes he may not make the best movies his movies are all memorable and you can tell with everyone of his movies he has a lot of passion thrown into the movie. I hate to think this but this seems very much a paycheck and "Please-give-me-an-Oscar" movie for Lasse Hallstorm. There is not a thing to this movie you will remember except for maybe some of the food (which looks delicious by the way.) That's why I don't like the movie is because its generic and nothing to it. Give me a bad movie that the director had a lot of passion for over an ok, technically better movie where nobody wanted to be their or had any passion for.
I didn't not go into this movie wanting to hate it I went into this movie wanting to love it because it was done by the guy who made one of my favorite movies of all time and has Helen Mirren as one of it's leads. I expected better from this movie.
I give it a 5/10- serviceable but forgettable.

Kids today
Due to the fact that I am moving this weekend their will be no movie review for Friday (though I did do two in one weekend last week) and my time valve has been off so I thought Thursday was yesterday until someone reminded me and I was worried because I basically had nothing. I didn't even have anything concrete for today until I started to think about it and while out of bordem turned to youtube to watch beyond the trailer- here's the link by the way:
https://www.youtube.com/user/BTTMovieMath
While watching an old episode some asked a question came up about a person who was concerned DC animated movies weren't kid friendly anymore (too much violence, swearing and too much adult content.) For example many people were very turned off by the type of language used in Guardians of the galaxy (masturbation joke, swear words, etc.) And that it wasn't appropriate for children especially since it was coming from Disney.
Now I'm pretty young, I'm still in high school and I have cousins and friends who are younger than me. I also still remember being in sixth grade. Why I am bringing up sixth grade? Well that's where I learned what the F word was as well as ninety percent of the swear words I know today. I have a cousin who is currently leaving fifth grade but knows some swear words already and will probably know more when he is in sixth grade. Heck I even have a cousin in first grade who knows one swear word know.
The thing is now a days kids are becoming more aware to not only swear words but sex today. I never had the talk with my parents but by sixth grade I knew what sex was. In this day and age more and more kids are becoming aware to stuff like this. I learned about swear words not from movies or TV shows but from my peers who in school used it like everyday language. I even started swearing under my breath by the time I was in seventh grade.
Whenever the subject of too inappropriate for children comes I always think "Most kids probably know what that shit is." I think the idea of being "too inappropriate" is a joke because kids aren't perfect little angels especially this day and age. Most of the inappropriate stuff most kids already know about and they talk about it with other kids. They just don't say it however if it's around adults. Kids know that it's better to not swear in front of adults so they won't get punished or a stern talking too.
That's why I've never thought the whole "we need to protect the children" thing was valid, most kids know this stuff and if they don't they will learn it eventually.

Weekend box office prediction- turtles, tornados, tomatoes and, Twerking oh my!
The weekend is fast approaching and this week not one, not two but four movies are opening this weekend. The movies are into the storm (poor Richard Armitage), A one-hundred foot journey ( Helen Mirren is awesome as always), Step up all in (how is that franchise still alive) and Teenage mutant ninja turtles (Thanks for destroying my childhood again.)
The industry predictions are:
1.) Into the storm- $11 million
2.) One-hundred foot journey- $ 15 million
3.) Step it up all in- $ 10 million
4.) Teenage mutant ninja turtles- $ 39 million
But that's stuffy old (and probably correct) Hollywood's predictions, here is mine:
Into the storm
Opening weekend: $9- $12 million
Domestic box office: $15- $20 million
International box office: $ 30- $40 million
world wide box office: $ 45- $ 60 million
One hundred foot journey
Opening weekend: $10- $20 million
Domestic box office: $ 70- $ 90 million
International box office: $ 100- $120 million
World wide box office: $170- $210 million
Step it up all in
Opening weekend: $ 4.7- $ 9 million
Domestic box office: $15- $20 million
International box office: $11- $30 million
World wide box office: $26- $ 50 million
Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Opening weekend: $40 million- $ 60 million
Domestic box office: $ 110- $150 million
International box office: $220-$260 million
World wide box office: $330 - $410 million
Weekend box office top ten
1.) Guardians of the galaxy
2.) Teenage mutant ninja turtles
3.) Lucy
4.) One-hundred foot journey
5.) Get on up
6.) Dawn of the planet of the apes
7.) Into the storm
8.) Hercules
9.)Planes fire and rescue
10.) Step up all in
I love Helen Mirren, she is my favorite actress and a perpetual old lady badass but I still expect her movie to only do #4 at the very maximum. Into the storm looks like a B movie and a sharknado rip-off without the sharks and I just feel so sorry for Richard Armitage who is a very good if underrated actor. Step up I could give a damn about and expect it to barely make the top ten. I've had my child hood butchered before with Last air bender and expected it to be butchered with Teenage mutant ninja turtles with sounds terrible. I also expect it to do only # 2 because of how well guardians unexpectedly did and how it will probably have legs.
That's the weekend box office and tomorrow... some sort of editorial and no review because I am moving.

Weekend box office: A raccon walks away with millions
Now taking a break from packing boxes I look at the weekend box office to see what everyone made. And the overarching result is:
Weekend box office
1.) Guardians of the galaxy- $94 million
2.) Lucy- $18 million
3.) Get on up-$ 14 million
4.) Hercules- $10 million
5.) Dawn of the planet of the apes- $8.7 million
6.) Planes fire & rescue- $ 6.4 million
7.) The purge: anarchy- $5 million
8.) Sex tape- $ 3.5 million
9.) And so it goes- $3.3 million
10.) A man most wanted- $3.3 million
Wow! I did not expect Guardians to make $94 million opening weekend. Don't get me wrong I love the movie but I only expected it to make $80 million tops and this just demolished that and everyone's expectations. In other words awesome! Guardians 2, Star-Lord meets his dad and it's Kevin Bacon (come one that would be hilarious.) Also love that Dawn is still going strong so I'm happy that two of my favorite movies of the year so far are doing really well. Lucy is doing particularly well too and I hope to get a black widow movie soon (come one Marvel you've proven your basically invincible just bite the bullet with her or Ms Marvel.) I am surprised Get on Up is doing as bad as it is, guess Marvel tends to eat up a weekend.
No movie review this week but box office predictions and editorial to go as planned. See you next time!

Magic in the moonlight review
Spoilers
I don't normally review two movies in one week but my mom wanted to see this movie, I owed her and I am moving next week so no movie review for that time while I settle in. Woody Allen is often called the king of romantic comedies with his crown jewel being Annie Hall (awesome movie go see it.) And even after Annie Hall has continued to make good movies such as Blue Jasmine and Midnight at Paris. Sad to say however this one is a bit of a stinker.
If you want a shorter version of this review- go see Guardians of the galaxy, you'll have a much more fun time worth your dollar value.
Magic in the moonlight is about a cynical, neurotic magician/ spiritualist debunker named Stanly (played by Colin Firth) is commissioned by his friend Howard to debunk Sophie Baker a claimed spiritualist. However Stanly after spending time with her he falls in love with her and starts to believe in her scam.
Going in I read reviews for the movie that made it seemed pretty freaking terrible. However in the first twenty or so minutes it didn't feel that bad. I was felt very satisfied so far and started to believe critics I respected were going a little far to call this movie out right bad. Then after the first twenty minutes and until the very end of the movie I could see exactly how bad Magic in the moonlight was and it was the first time I ever wanted to walk out of the theater.
It's so boring, it was so boring, It felt like an eternity had passed since the beginning of the movie to the very end. Heck in the third act I made an excuse to go to the bathroom and instead went to the screening of sex tape next to the screening of this movie and watched six minutes of that. Sex tape is a worse movie than Magic in the moonlight but at least it's still entertaining. I complained that Guardians of the galaxy was too fast paced despite being a two hour and one minute movie, but Magic in the moonlight is a ninety minute movie but was so slow paced I felt as though I was their for three hours.
This along with Tammy is one of the worse written movies of 2014. While Tammy had a boring near nothing plot, Magic in the moonlight suffered from inconsistent characters and lapses in logic. Which is strange considering our main character is a cynical, realist who we are often told but never show to be a very logical guy. Stanly the guy Colin Firth plays switches beliefs on a dime and forgives way too easily for his character to be coherent.
Firth's character is not the only thing about this movie. Firth himself is not that very good in this movie. He's a great actor and is an academy award winner but that doesn't show here. Woody Allen has been criticized for the fact that most of his male leads are all just Woody Allen stand ins and this is never more prevalent here. That's because Firth can't do neurotic or cynical and comes off more as sarcastic. His acting in this is very weird and almost unnatural as if Firth very uncomfortable in this role.
Emma Stone as Sophie is fine and her character is one of the few consistent things in this movie but she adds nothing to this movie. The romantic chemistry between Firth and Stone is also not that great either, I never bought that they were in love and the film gave me no reason to suspect they were more than just friends. Firth had a fiancée' in this movie he left for Sophie but we never see her except for a minute at the beginning when she really should have been in more of this movie. In fact Firth's character seemed happier with her than with Stone's character.
The movie's main theme is science versus magic but the movie never properly takes a stand in either side and it ends up making the plot of the movie very unfinished and while the movie's ending was very cute it left so many plot threads unresolved that I almost felt that the movie could have benefited from another hour even though I barely got through ninety minutes of the goddamn thing.
Overall I give this movie a 2/10- Inconsistent characters, sloppily written, completely unfinished and just long and boring.

Guardians of the galaxy review
Spoilers!
Guardians of the galaxy was film that a lot of people were worried about, it's an obscure property that not even most comic fans knew about. So when they announced the movie not many people knew what to think overall. Then they started filming, they got a director and actors and then the trailers started coming out. Yet people were still a little scared- how was it?
Well I can assure you Guardians of the galaxy is a very fun, beautiful, funny and honest movie with a bit of heart to it. So go see it! (This is going to be a very spoiler filed review.)
Before I get on to the film itself, let me get on to the visuals- and this might be the most visually stunning Marvel movie ever. It's has gorgeous bright colors, good practical and CGI designs that mesh well together. Two of the most visually stunning moments are when the Nova Corp ships create a barrier around the dark aster (Ronan's ship.) The other one is where Groot saves the team by creating a barrier around them. The other is when Groot saves the group and creates a barrier around them it's a very pretty scene.
The film starts out actually rather dark for a marvel movie. Peter Quil's mother dies and gives him a present as a good by gift. Before she dies, she ask him to hold her hand before she does but he's too upset to do it (can't blame the kid, he only looks about nine and that would freak me out too.) So she dies and Peter gets very upset so he runs out of the hospital and gets abducted by Yondu (Space Meryl) who had the coolest weapon in the film and his band of Ravangers- basically a gang of space red necks (not even kidding their.)
Peter Quil grows up to be a thief 26 years later and steals an orb not knowing it's an infinity stone in reality. He goes to jail where he meets Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax. They escape and while selling the orb they find out what it is and what it really can do (destroy worlds.) So they decide to step up and save the galaxy. Yet the
Christian- I mean... Kree fundamentalist Ronan the accuser is out for the orb too and wants it. Along with pretty much everyone in the galaxy.
The film throughout has very light and playful tone but is still riddled with a lot of emotional moments along the way, and it's very much how real people would reveal/deal with their pain. In fact some of my favorite emotional moments were with Drax who is played by wrestler Dave Bautista in the film and is very good- I actually think he did way better at the dramatic moments then he did at the funny moments (which he was still good at.)
Peter Quil is our lead and gets the most development out of all the five characters. Chris Pratt is refreshingly a goofy, fun protagonist who is instantly likeable in the movie. Groot is just freaking adorable and while he does say 'I am Groot' he says it very few times because it would get annoying after a while and is a very great silent character and is very much the heart of the movie. The character everyone is talking about though is the anamorphic raccon Rocket who is the most awesome character in the movie. He is a badass scene stealer who actually is a bit tragic especially during a scene when he gets drunk and starts ranting about something someone else did. Gamora is very cool too, has an interesting backstory and has a lot of screen time but I wished she was more developed as a character. I wished the subplot with her sister Nebula had been furthered discussed, I read the Nebula prequel comic and it was very good but I wish that had been reflected in the movie.
Now lets get to the villains. Ronan has the typical problem most Marvel villians have (except Red Skull, Aldridge Killian and Loki) is that they are criminally under developed. And Ronan is one of the most interesting villains in the Marvel universe. He's not that bad, he's way better than Malekith or a lot of other Marvel movie villains and has a lot more too him but he needed more screen time to properly develop him. If Nebula who is a way weaker villain than Ronan had been cut, and Ronan had been made Gamora's adopted brother or mentor he would have been infinitely more interesting. Nebula really hinders Ronan's development. Korath is good but the real prize is Thanos who in motion looks really cool and is voiced rather well by Josh Brolin and I can't wait to see more of him.
This movie has been called slow paced but others but I actually thought it was very fast paced and I actually wished it had been longer than it was (two hours and forty-five minutes) to develop more characters.
Other characters in this are Benicio Del Toro who plays Taneleer Tivan the collector. He is memorable in both his looks and the fact he plays the collector as though he is high (which is fun.) Glenn Close and John C Reily do a good job playing Nova Corps members and it's refreshing that they believe the guardians when they say Ronan is on his way. My favorite Nova was Peter Seranfinowicz who plays Denarian Saal. This isn't a knock against the movie but just to mess with fans how cool would have it been if his name had been Jesse Alexander and it was revealed he had a son back on earth.
The film also has an amazing soundtrack that isn't overused and used to great use. It also has the really great action scenes especially when it comes to ships flying. When I said the film was honest I mean it in the sense that these are how really human beings (or aliens) would talk. This is how a real person would give a speech, this is what a real person would act and this is how they would feel. All of the guardians felt very organic and real, like this could be you and I really liked that.
This film is endlessly entertaining, with a lot of laughs and a lot of heart sometimes coming from the most unexpected people and has overall the best ending and best way a bad guy gets beat then any other marvel movie which is awesome. I recommend seeing this and even if your not a comic book fan you'll fit in to this world easily and won't get lost.
I give this movie a 8.5/10~ Could have been slower paced and better villians and still a few more flaws but awesome characters, awesome comedy, good heart and just whopping good time. Captain America: Winter Soldier is still my favorite Marvel movie and one of my favorite comic book movies but it beat out Avengers for me and is now on my top five favorite comic book movies (so it's at #4 right now.)
