St. Vincent Review

I saw two movies this weekend St. Vincent (which I wanted to see) and Alexander and the terrible no good very bad day(which I didn't but I went for my mom and grandma.) I am going to review St. Vincent for the my main movie review and Alexander T.N.G.V.B.D tomorrow due to laziness, I saw St. Vincent first, and I have to prepare for school tomorrow.

St. Vincent stars the lovable as Bill Murray plays asshole Vincent Mckenna, a drunk smoker war veteran with a lot of issues. He spends his days gambling, drinking, sleeping with his lady of the night (watch the film to get that joke) and (possibly, maybe) the mother of his child Daka, and taking care of his Alzheimer stricken wife. He's also in debt and one of the ways he figures out how to make money is by baby sitting for his constantly working single mother divorcee Maggie Bronstein (Melissa McCarthy) her son Oliver (Jaeden Liebher.)

Probably the best part of this movie is the characters and the actors portraying them. Murray does a fantastic job and it reminds you why you like Bill Murray as an actor, I love the character of Vincent, the whole film is about how saints can be anyone even if they are SUPER flawed and Vincent perfectly emulates that. From the beginning of the film to the end of the film he is a flawed and kind of a dick human being but he has a lot of redeeming qualities and is just too likable. That was so refreshing to me that he doesn't due a complete one-eighty to a completely saintly guy by the end and while he is better he's still a bit of an ass.

The kid who plays Oliver is very good as well and the character of Oliver is very cool and while he does grate in some scenes he is overall a good three-dimensional character. Melissa McCarthy does a really good job as well and for once plays a very subtle character with a lot of dignity, the character really challenges her as an actress and proves she can do straight drama if she choose to. There's this one scene that got me really chocked up because it reminded me a lot of my mother and I won't spoil it for you. Naomi Watts plays Daka in this and while small does a very good job and is very entertaining and serves a pretty good purpose in the film.

Also a really great thing is that the film does have a bully subplot and while that is a horrible cliche typically they do it new and refreshing in here as the kid who is the bully actually has a reason and actually becomes Oliver's friend halfway into the film so there can be room for more story. When that happened I was like "Thank you movie for doing that new!"

If I did have to complain about this movie is that it does dive into some cheesy areas, and there's these two subplots with Maggie's ex-husband and Vincent and possible the Mafia (I don't know it wasn't clear) that didn't really need to be there or should have been really fleshed out more.

I give this movie a 8.5/10~Sometimes cheesy and a lot could have been cut but heart-warming, charming and full of great characters and performances.
