A/N: SPOILER ALERT! SPOLIER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
I know this was supposed to come out last weekend but yeah that was from general laziness so sorry and I had to clean my bathroom yesterday.
Spy is a movie starring Melissa McCarthy as Susan Cooper a down on her luck, insecure CIA analyst to Bradley Fine (Jude Law), during a mission to secure a nuclear bomb the bomb comes into the hands Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne) who due to moles in the CIA comes to know every agents real identity so with no other options CIA director Elaine Crocker (Allison Janey) sends Susan Cooper in to stop Rayna from selling the bomb.
Do not believe any of the trailers this movie is awesome, hilarious and is probably one of the best movies of the year so far. It's a victim of bad marketing making it look like a bad Melissa McCarthy movie full of fat jokes when it's really a movie of female empowerment when you think about it.
Susan Cooper from the trailer seems like an incompetent secretary who is just bumbling around in the situation while in the movie Susan Cooper is actually a genius both intellectually and physically in terms of being a spy but was "sniped" by Bradley Fine (who she has a crush on) into just settling for a analyst job and the movie is about her getting over her own insecurities, getting over Bradley Fine, getting out of the submissive, oppressive position she's been stuck in for years and become the badass she was always meant to be and it in the end gets her the respect of her superiors including Fine.
This character arc was further exemplified by the other female characters in the film. First by her best friend Nancy( played by Myranda Hart) who is great and has wonderful chickmance with Susan and like Susan in the beginning was also in a position where she relatively had no power and due to her not being a traditional beauty like someone like Karen Walker (Morena Baccain) and is often looked over though throughout the movie she is in her own way able to help Susan and helps save the day at the end. The villain Rayna (played by one of my favorite actresses Rose Byrne) who upon first glance is a typical femme-fatal but in reality is a three dimensional character with an actual backstory who the only reason she's a villain is because of how much her father ruled over her life just because she wasn't what he wanted and as we get to know her is a likeable, understandable character who after meeting Susan to a degree she manages to break out of the hold her father has on her just like the hold Bradley had on Susan. Lastly the fact that neither Susan or Nancy don't meat the traditional standards of a typical female spy in these kind of movies being that they aren't perfect 10/10's and while they are good spies they aren't perfect both have some big flaws.
So feminists or anyone who likes strong female characters this is the movie for you.
Now while the women are great that doesn't mean the men characters aren't really good as well. The standout and really the scene stealer in this movie Jason Statham who plays agent Ford, and after this I hope to god he takes more comedic roles because he's brilliant here. In the typical Jason Statham movie he plays a super serious badass who does the most dangerous things despite how high the chances of killing him they might have. In this he makes fun of that typical stereotype he plays and everything he did and said I laughed out loud at. Peter Serafinowicz is in this too playing Aldo and he's great and you can tell he's loving every minute he's on screen playing this character. I hope he gets more mainstream American roles because of this. Even Bradley Fine who is a total jerk is played by Jude Law whose great in every movie he is in.
Another surprising thing about this movie is that the is a lot action in this movie and it's really good, they do tend to a bit too much slow motion but it's clear and you can see it and it's super enjoyable. The comedy is top notch but I'm keeping my lips sealed because this is one of those movies where in terms of jokes you need to go cold on, the only scene that doesn't really work is between Peter Seranfinowicz character Aldo and Melissa McCarthy's Susan Cooper in a dungeon and it is slightly cringe worthy but it doesn't go on too long.
I give this movie a 9/10- Funny, cool female characters, good action and everything you could want in a summer comedy.
