Editorial~ Top 4 Fallout 4 predictions

Schools Out! No more homework! No more waking up early! No annoying classmates just relaxation. Now I can devote more time to movie junkies so hopefully I can post things on time now.

How many people actually remember this cartoon?

Yesterday the trailer for Fallout 4 came out pretty much setting the internet on fire with hype and speculation including myself. While I've never played the first two, my favorite video game of all time is Fallout 3 I love the gameplay, I love the story, I love the characters, I love the graphics (yes even the people graphics) I just love everything about it. Fallout 3 is one of those games I could play over and over again and never get bored. I like Fallout New Vegas as well but Fallout 3 is my main man. So actually seeing Fallout 4 is real makes me seriously consider buying a PS4 (or at the very least asking for one for Christmas.)

Now I know this is mostly a movie blog but in order to get back into the swing of things and to get out my own fevered speculation. So here is my top 3 predictions for Fallout 4.

4.) Fallout 4 is taking place a little bit after Fallout 3 and deals with the aftermath of it

Now  I know this sounds like a 'duh' kind of speculation but let me explain because my theory for this involves my theory of what the plot might be. In Fallout 3 the Lone Wanderer ends up bringing pure drinking water to the Wastelands, however while I'm no scientist I know it can take thousands of years before nuclear radiation goes away and while yes in Fallout 3 you do end up sacrificing your or one of your companions lives in order to make project purity work (sorry for spoiling a seven year game) it would still take a while for the effects of project purity to set in for not just the wastelands of America but to cleanse the entire world of radiation.

In Fallout New Vegas, it's about four years after Fallout 3 and the Wasteland is still really badly irradiated. It's going to take a while before it effects America in it's entirety. In the trailer Boston (where the game is taking place) Boston looks good for a Post-nuclear- apocalypse future it's far from good. So the wasteland is in a state of recuperation.

Good but not great

In terms of continuity in the series my theory is that this takes place about seven-ten years after Fallout 3 (my range due to the fact Fallout New Vegas takes place four years after 3 and the game came out four years after the third game.)

In the trailer also we see the Brotherhood of Steel in the trailer:

Protectors of the Wasteland

My prediction is that after Fallout 3 now that the conclave, (depending on which ending is canon now for Fallout New Vegas) and either the Lost Legion or NCR have fallen the Brotherhood is in a state of trying to rebuild civilization yet the path to peace is not a smooth journey as while the wasteland in terms of nature is healing chaos is still prevalent among the people in it. My theory for the plot is that our main protagonist once he or she (I hope they still have gender choice in the game) has come out of the vault their main journey will be assisting the Brotherhood in bringing peace to the wasteland which is why in the trailer we see a very specific shot of a power armor suit.

Looks like someone is trying to fix up something.

3.) The tutorial will be set when during the nuclear war

One of my favorite parts of the trailer and perhaps one of the most interesting parts is that the beginning of the trailer with a dog (who is probably not Dogmeat) is walking around a house that is interspliced with scenes of what seem to be the day the nuclear bombs went off.

United states year 2077

Now it doesn't seem like Bethesda would include these scenes just to be artsy especially to a song whose lyrics include the phrase "It's all over." One of the aspects I loved most about Fallout 3 is the tutorial of it where you are basically playing through the first nineteen years of the main characters life while learning the skills we will use throughout the game. One of the most disappointing features of Fallout New Vegas (while I still liked the game) was the lack of a unique tutorial.

My prediction is the tutorial for this game will be us as someone who manages to get into one of the vaults on the day the nuclear bombs go off where we will learn the skills and gameplay mechanics of the game. This also leads into my number 1 speculation which is...

2.) The main character of the game will be not a descendent of someone who survived the nuclear bombings but A survivor of the nuclear bombings.

Ok I know this sounds completely crackpot of an idea but listen to what I've got to say. One of the things that rumored about a year or so was the description of the main character. The rumor was that the main character of Fallout 4 was actually put into stasis for some reason along with his fellow vault residents and somehow the character ends up waking up and going into the wasteland.

So in conjunction with the tutorial theory my theory is that the person we are playing as in the tutorial will be the person we are playing as in the game. On the day the nuclear bomb goes off our protagonist manages to get into a vault in time before the bombs descends. Not sure the vaults will be enough the overseer or whoever is in charge orders all the members in stasis pods until the bombings have stopped. However something goes wrong in a Javik-Mass-Effect-3 style the members of Vault 111 end up stuck in the stasis pods and as time goes on the power maintaining the pods goes out one by one killing the residents except for the protagonist who I think we may have already seen in the trailer. I'm not talking about the guy we see wearing the vault uniform at the end of the trailer but during the scenes in the nuclear bombings as a little boy.

In the trailer we see heavily emphasized shots of a little boy wearing a stripped t-shirt and a red baseball cap who is running towards the location of the vault.

Our hero (possibly) on the most tragic day of their life.

The kids who also has similar dark hair to the protagonist shown at the very end. Now this could just be Bethesda using a random character model to use in the trailer but with the fact we see him twice and in front center of the scenes I would like the believe otherwise.

Now of course a rebuttal for this could be that the kid is clearly only eleven or twelve while the person we see at the end is in his late twenties to early thirties. However remember this character (if I'm correct) was put into stasis and the thing about stasis is that it's a lot like putting meat in the freezer it keeps it fresh for a long time but not permanently and eventually the meat starts to decay. The time between the nuclear bombings and the beginning of the Fallout series is roughly about two hundred years. Now of course in a kind of Vault 101 type setting where it's basically an underground civilization the boy wouldn't live past 75 but if the boy were to be put in stasis when he's eleven or twelve while he would still age in stasis he wouldn't age at a normal rate so his aging would be significantly slowed down. So in a two hundred year time span the boy would only age to about his early thirties by the time he would wake up again.

1.) Character motivation and the moniker

Now to tie all three theories together what will the main characters motivation will be and his moniker. In Fallout 1 the moniker was 'The Vault Dweller' and the player motivation was the survival of yourself and your vault, in Fallout 2 the moniker was "The Choosen one" and the motivation being getting your people back from the enclave, in Fallout 3 the moniker was "The Lone Wanderer" and your goal (well a few of your goals) was to find your dad and bring back pure water to the wastelands, and finally in Fallout New Vegas the moniker was "The Courier" and your motivations were revenge and trying to bring order to the Mojav desert.

A similar pattern between all four of these games is the motivation is a selfless motivation even in New Vegas's the motivation starts out selfish but ends up becoming selfless (well depending on how you play.) The moniker is usually represents some type of heroic archetype or symbol of importance.  My prediction is the moniker will be "The Sole Survivor" and his motivation will be trying to rebuild the world that was destroyed in his time. With this character if the whole stasis theory is correct might have a Captain America sort of complex a person out of time who must readjust to the world while trying to make it better.

The protagonist arc could be that he feels guilty that his generation destroyed the world and as a way of seeking a redemption for that and the fact he survived where all the vault residents and millions of other people who didn't get to a vault died. That would be a very interesting and very tragic character arc.

The Sole Survivor

Also as more of a fan theory with not much behind it in the trailer we also get a shot of a couple and their baby. Who are given a lot of emphasis in the trailer as well. As we see them in the beginning and seemingly them getting obliterated by a nuclear bomb.

Well since the main protagonist was a little kid during the bombings and he had to have come from somewhere and the people do have dark hair like the protagonist in the trailer I'm speculating that the adults are his or her parents and the baby being their brother or sister. Somehow the protagonist got separated from their parents and sibling either while be let into the vault (their family for whatever reason not being allowed in or not being let in on time) or getting separated during the run towards the vault (the family then goes looking for the lost protagonist) and they end up dying adding more towards the survivors guilt I speculate the main protagonist might be having.

That's my top 4 fallout 4 predictions for the game and comment below if you have anything to add or anything to refute me with. Have a nice day and excuse while I go look for a summer job to buy a PS4.
