Creed movie review

If your wondering what happened this week is that I had way too much homework Wednesday and Thursday to work on the blog and I got really sick on Friday so I could barely do anything except sleep and on Saturday I was going to do the weekend box office prediction until I looked and saw that only 'Krampus' was coming out which didn't have a wide release and I don't think most people knew even existed. Yet I did see the movie Creed and so I am here with a review for Creed.

Creed is the seventh installment in the Rocky movie series, Adonis "Donnie" Johnson Creed is the illegitimate son of heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Starting out in a juvenile detention center after the death of his mother, he is taken in by Apollo's widow Mary Anne where he grows up into a temperamental young man who works at a security firm yet boxes on the side. Eventually he quits his job to follow his dad's footsteps as a boxer and seeks help from none other than his fathers old rival turned friend Rocky Balboa.

First off I have never seen the previous Rocky movies. I wasn't born by the time the first five movies of the series came out and when the sixth one came out Rocky Balboa I was too young to see it. Not to mention I've never been a fan of sports movies so while I do want to see the others their not that high on movie watch list. Yet I can safely say after watching it I did very much enjoy Creed.

The film is well acted, very well directed and well scripted movie. The movie was directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler the same guy who did Frutivale Station (a movie I really want to see and I have on my list in Netflix but I haven't been able to rouse myself to watch the really depressing flick) and he does a great job here. Pacing for the movie is perfect it never feels too slow but it never feels too fast as well and all the story beats come at the right moment and by the end of the ninety minutes you feel perfectly satisfied. The tone is very uniform and consistent, the dialogue comes off natural, their are one or two speeches in the movie but their few and far between and never feel forced. The movie is also not overly comedic but it's not lifeless in fact it's quite upbeat and the jokes in the movie are very natural as well.

I hate to keep using the word but 'natural' can really be said about the acting as well. Everyone feels like a real person here with none of those overly dramatic angry or crying scenes you see in movies around this time of year but unlike those movies it's a lot more effective of getting an emotional response out of you. I found myself getting more teary eyed than I do around other movies.

Everyone one is good in this and yes even Sylvester Stallone does a good job in this movie. Their is not over acting or dead-pan deliveries from him here as he actually gives a good and reserved performance, it's not Oscar worthy by any means but it doesn't have to be. The stands out to me were Michael B. Jordan as Donnie, Tessa Thompson as Donnie's girlfriend Bianca and Tony Bellew as Ricky "Pretty Conlan the guy Donnie fights in the movie. Jordan is very good in the role as he makes what would otherwise be a very stereotypical sports movie protagonist very human and very complex as we see his struggle with his own legacy vs. the one of his father and how he learns to come to term with his issues. Thompson, like Jordon, also gives what would otherwise be the stereotypical girlfriend role a lot of sensitivity and character and the character of Bianca actually works as a great foil for Donnie as she too is a person who is trying to follow her dream even against some health issues that are similar to Donnie but not the same and Thompson and Jordan do have good chemistry together.

Yet the stand out to me was Tony Bellew as Ricky Conlan which is weird because he's not in the movie that much but whenever we see him he always leaves an impression and even in scenes where they just mention him he has some kind of presences. I am so grateful they did not make Conlan a villain in this movie but instead make him just a very human guy who has a lot of issues and made a lot of mistakes in his life and Bellew makes that clear through his performance through every scene he is in as he comes off very likeable and honorable if temperamental. Like Bianca, Conlan serves as another foil for Donnie as Conlan has a legacy but unlike Donnie's where it's someone else's it's his own. Whereas Donnie is trying to make his own legacy at the same time respecting his fathers Conlan made a legacy for himself and his kids already and botched it up big time and is trying to preserve it before he goes to jail.

Now before it sounds like I'm worshipping this movie at the alter this movie does have one flaw and it's pretty huge especially since it leads to other smaller flaws. Besides the characters of Donnie, Bianca and Conlan this is a pretty generic sports movie in terms of themes and story. It's the same story you've seen in a lot of sports movie. You've got the hothead lead trying to prove himself in his area of expertise and they happen to have big daddy issues to go along with it, you have the artsy girlfriend who supports him, the concerned mother, the rivals and the mentor with the main theme of living up to yourself and your legacy having been done in a lot of other movies not just in the sports genre but a lot of action, adventure and Oscar drama movies. Heck they even have a cancer subplot that really could have been cut as the person doesn't even die in this movie and it would have made the movie stronger.

Now this wouldn't have been as bad if the movie hadn't tapped into new and interesting themes with a lot more potential that was ultimately wasted or weren't developed enough. Mainly the idea of how important an athletes image is especially in today's society and especially how just one mistake can ruin an athlete for life (real life examples could be Tiger Woods and now Tom Brady.)For example the character of Conlan who the only reason he's fighting Donnie is because he's going to jail for a gun charge and if he fights Apollo Creed's son his reputation won't be tarnished completely and he can go out on a victory. Also when it's revealed to the public Donnie is Apollo Creed's son it cuts to a scene of two ESPN guys talking about it and whether or not it harms Apollo Creed's legacy now. Their are other themes they touch upon that never go through all the way and if they had gone through with it the movie would have been one of the best of the year instead of just "Pretty good."

Now of course while it does waste a lot of potential unlike some of the most abysmal movies of the year Pitch Perfect 2 and Pan the movie is strong enough to overcome that and I definitely want to see a sequel to this movie especially with the same team back as I believe without the crutches of the typical clichés of most sports movies they could turn out something really special. On that note too the ending is also very good, it's very quiet and nothing that big but like most of the emotional moments in this movie leaves a big impact. It's also one of those ending where if they just made this movie things would be fine but if they made a sequel you would also be perfectly fine as well.

I give this movie a 8.5/10- A really good movie and one of the most consistent movies of the year that has a lot of potential it wastes but it's still strong enough to enjoy.

Weekend box office- 11/30/15 A.K.A couldn't come up with a title.

Yeah sorry about skipping last week I legitimately forgot it was Thanksgiving week and their was a lot of preparations to do so sorry. THIS WEEK is the official reboot for the blog.

Last week was a week of "good enough" unless you were Victor Frankenstein than in that case you couldn't have bombed harder if you were an atomic bomb which in it's first weekend had landed outside of the top ten in the number twelve slot. Anyway who cares about Victor Frankenstein (because apparently a lot of people didn't) here is the weekend's top ten.

Top 10
1.) The Hunger Games Mockingjay part 2- $52 million
2.) The Good dinosaur- $ 55 million
3.) Creed- $42 million
4.) Spectre- $ 12 million
5.) The Peanuts movie- $ 9 million
6.) The night before- $ 8 million
7.) The secret in their eyes- $4.42 million
8.)Spotlight- $4.4 million
9) Brooklyn- $3.9
10.) The Martian- $3.2 million

No real surprises except for maybe The Good Dinosaur which opened at number two and with only $55 million despite a five day weekend and coming off the back burner of Inside out although it did have a poor marketing and only really "good enough reviews." This especially not that great when compared to Inside out, Frozen, and Big Hero six other Disney/Pixar movies which did much better critically and commercially. The movie had a $200 million dollar budget (the other movies mentioned had cheaper budgets than this) and while it will make it's money back it definitely did lower than they expected.

Mockingjay while it did make the number one again this week it's still lagging behind in terms of what it was originally projected at and the numbers it's predecessors have done. Whether it's because of the splitting the movie into two parts, people not generally liking the last movie, franchise fatigue or the Mockingjay book itself.

Anyway that's what I've got to say on the weekend box office and other than that see you Wednesday for the Prediction for this weekend (hopefully.)

Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2 review

Mockingjay part 2 is the last movie of the Hunger Games Franchise, Katniss Everdeen has found Peeta, the rebellion is starting to win and is ready to face off against the Evil President Snow but the journey towards peace might be more complicated than she originally thought.

For this review I'm actually want to start out with the bad of the movie, now before you shoot me Mocking jay part two is not a bad movie, it's actually a pretty solid movie and I quite liked it, I just have a lot more to say about the negatives of this movie than I do the positives. Not that I have many negatives, I actually only have three but they are still major ones.

Mockingjay did not need to be split into two movies. If Mockingjay part 1 was a movie without it's third act than Mockingjay is the third act of a movie, what would have been at the most only thirty minutes blown up to a two hour and ten minute movie. While it's not bad but it's really jarring in terms of structure and pacing especially in the beginning where it just abruptly picks up from the last scene of the movie and they have to stretch out the climax, falling action and conclusion into a longer than necessary runtime. This could have been done in a space of ninety minutes without anything being loss. In fact the movie feels almost too stretched out as throughout half the movie it feels as if nothing happens or things slow down to a grinding holt.

Jennifer Lawrence is still miscast as Katniss Everdeen. Now a huge positive of the movie is that every actor is really good in this movie and even those who don't have a lot to do like Michelle Forbes as Lieutenant Jackson still make a good impact. Jennifer Lawrence , who especially in comedies is a good actress, is really flat and has an almost non-existent personality in this. Now I know for a movie Katniss wouldn't have her narration like she does in the book and would come off on the outside perspective as very quiet and super serious. Yet an actor can still play a  reserved or stoic character and still have them be interesting or at the very least be a character and have emotions, case in point Hayley Atwell who plays Peggy Carter plays her as very emotionally reserved and serious person yet still makes her a real human being with depth and believability that Lawrence should have brought to this role yet didn't or couldn't.

The last major issue is that the movie isn't dull by any means it feels like one big anti-climax. A lot of things you can tell that were supposed to be epic, shocking or just stir any big emotions from the audience were just meh. They were either done alright but that left you feeling more 'meh' than angry, sad, happy, excited etc. or were outright done poorly. I don't want to give anything away for people who haven't seen it but their are a few character deaths within this movie two of which stand out to me as the two things I just mentioned. The first one is during the march to president Snow's mansion which was done passably but it didn't have much emotional impact even though in light of the whole series should have been one of the most devastating moments in the entire movie. The second was done very cheesy for a character who while had a character we didn't know but for five minutes. The action itself while there was more than Mockingjay part 1 there were only two that were all that memorable and everything else was either forgettable and lackluster.

Now before it sounds as if I am tearing this movie apart for the most part this was a well-constructed, well acted, and well written movie. The cinematography, the special effects, music and directing of this movie was really good. The monsters looked real and never looked fake, the war torn setting of the capital was nice too look at and the music gave you the feelings war is supposed to make you feel despair, sadness and even confusion.

Yet the best part of this movie was the acting, as I said even the smallest actors with the smallest bit parts gave you something to latch on too even if they were basically Star Trek redshirts. Yet of the main cast Josh Hutcherson and especially Donald Sutherland were probably the best. Josh Hutcherson made you feel both sympathy for Peeta and made you understand what he was going through yet also fear and anger at his actions as you genuinely didn't know what this guy was going to do next. Donald Sutherland's Snow was probably the best in this movie, while you still got the cold, intimidating version of the character you also got the sense of fragility and fear in the way that made you believe Snow was not the 'nothing can touch me' evil tyrant like in the last movies but just a human being who could tell his time was up but didn't want to believe and at the end accepts it with hints of insanity and even some remorse. I felt more of a attachment to President Snow than I did for Katniss in the entire movie.

I also loved the relationship between Peeta and Katniss in the movie. It's sweet, heartbreaking, tragic and heartwarming all in the same go. Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence do have nice chemistry and throughout the whole movie I was just waiting for these two to get together because to me they were right for each other. I loved the ending with these two as you felt that despite what they went through they could get through life together and are one of my favorite movie couples in recent memory even with the whole Gale-love-triangle thing they were my favorite part of the movie.

Overall I give this movie a 7/10- This is a movie won't end up on anybody's 'worst of' end of the years list as it is too good for that but doesn't do anything to push itself to 'best of' the year status. Plus this movie didn't need to be split into two parts to the point where I think it weakened the movie rather than strengthen it and I'm a person who didn't mind it when they split 'Harry Potter' and 'Twilight' into two movies. I do recommend waiting to rent it on Demand, buy the DVD or even wait until Netflix to see but if you a fan of the franchise I do recommend it in theaters.

Update- Back to form

Hey I'm not dead!

If you've noticed ever since the last week of August I've been M.I.A from the blog writing sphere for multiple reasons.

1.) I went back to school and this is probably the big reason I've been out for the past few months. I've been trying to study more, I'm in a few clubs some where I have important positions in and just trying to get through the first part of the year with the least amount of injury's I can manage,

2.) Nothing important came out for a while. September and for most of October have been dead zones for movies to review and when things finally started to kick into gear I got busier with school. Now I did manage to see two movies so far Black Mass (awesome and a great comeback for Johnny Depp) and Pan (one of the worst movies of the year) but other than that it's been a while since I've really been in the movie theater.

Now things have slowed down for me so I plan to get back into Movie Junkie's again after so long. I'm planning on not changing that much with Tuesdays and Wednesday still being box office and box office predictions, with Thursdays being changed to editorial day and Sunday being movie review day. I hope to get back into routine next week but as a way of getting myself off the ground and running I hope to do either a review of Spectre or Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2 for this Sunday.

Stupid poster but still looking to see this movie.

Cool Poster but I don't really like the Daniel Craig James Bond movies so I'm a bit of a mixed bag on this.

Weekend box office~ The end of Summer

Well it's that time of year again the last week of Summer. More importantly the last two movies of Summer. The two last summer movies coming out this week are the Sinister 2 and America Ultra a Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart spy-stoner comedy movie. Currently because next week is the start of the new school year I will not be seeing a movie this weekend but rather preparing to for school this coming Monday but expect to see a review for Man from Uncle coming in it's place.

I have never seen the last Sinister film because I don't traditionally tend to watch horror movies that much. Yet the trailers for the film make it look good and not as jumped scared filled as it might appear to be. It will probably make a good amount of money since Horror movies are typically cheap to produce and their is always a fan base to go see these movies although to me they would probably make more money if they waited and released this in October in time for Halloween.

Now the other film American Ultra from the trailers alone the film doesn't look that interesting despite the premise, it actually just looks like your run of the mill stoner comedy with Spy movie elements it looks like it doesn't know what to do with. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart acting wise look fine in it, while I don't like Kristen Stewart as a person too much you can't say she's a bad actress because she isn't, she just keeps getting stuck in bad movies.

   Anyway here's my prediction.

Sinister 2
Budget: N/A
Weekend box office:$15-$20 million
Domestic box office:$25-$30 million
International box office: $20-$25 million
World wide box office: $45-$55 million

Horror movies while do make a lot in comparison for what they cost to make but in terms of what movies normally make nowadays it's pretty small.

American Ultra
Budget: $12 million
Weekend box office: $10-$20 million
Domestic box office: $20-$25 million
International box office:$30-$40 million
World wide box office:  $50-$65 million

I expect this out of the two movies to be the one that sells the most since a lot more people like to laugh at a movie than be afraid at one and while I may not be interested other people might be and it pretty much cost nothing to make in Hollywood terms.

Weekend box office
1.) Straight outta Compton
2.) American Ultra
3.) Rouge nation
4.) Sinister 2
5.) The man from uncle
6.) Fantastic Four
7.) The Gift
8.) Ant-man
9.) Vacation
10.) Minions

That's my weekend box office prediction and hopefully I'll see you Friday or Saturday for some sort of new post (maybe.)

Weekend box office- I'm back

I just got back from visiting my grandparents house and now I'm back on the internet so I can hopefully get back to my usual schedule which I plan to do this week. Maybe. I know I promised three movie reviews and only did one of them sorry I forgot after posting the Rouge Nation review I was leaving the next day.

Any the weekend box office is official and the movie that one was the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton (haven't seen it yet but I want to) with Mission Impossible Rouge nation and Man from uncle (Which I did see over my visit- maybe expect something this Sunday.) Now while the N.W.A and it's music were way before my time I love biopics and I hope to see Straight Outta Compton this soon. It's sad to see Man from Uncle not do as well or even get second place because (as you might see soon) even though I'm half and half on the movie I do want to see a sequel and unless it stays consistently in the top 3 it might not get it.

Weekend box office
1.)Straight Outta Compton- $60 million
2.) Mission Impossible Rouge nation- $17 million
3.) Man from uncle- $13 million
4.) Fantastic Four- $8 million
5.) The Gift- $ 6 million
6.) Ant-man- $ 5.4 million
7.) Vacation- $5.18 million
8.) Minions- $5.14 million
9.) Ricki and the Flash- $4 million
10.) Trainwreck- $3 million

That's last weekend box office and hopefully I see you all Wednesday for my prediction for what will be in the top ten next week.

Mission Impossible Rouge Nation review

First off sorry about the hiatus last week I was in California for my Summer vacation. I'm being serious I was in California for the last week or so, which is why I haven't been able to update the blog and I'm getting ready to go to my grandparents house due to other events so this week so I won't be near a computer for a while so I'm calling a hiatus from my normal schedule but so that way I don't leave you guys without anything for another week this week your getting three movie reviews (Trainwreck, Rouge Nation and Ant-man.) Today will be Rouge Nation.

Anyway last Sunday I saw the latest installment in Mission Impossible franchise Rouge Nation. In this movie Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is investigating a mysterious international crime syndicate known as... The Syndicate. However recently the IMF has been shut down due the amount of dangerous stunts, innocent lives lost and unnecessary damage that has been caused (mainly by Ethan) and so Ethan goes rouge so now while trying to investigate The Syndicate he also has to evade the CIA who want to capture him and he's going to need the help of his friends William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), Luther Stickwell (Ving Rhames) and the Femme Fatal double Agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson.)

Going in I was very excited, I've always been a fan of the mission impossible series even more so than the Bond Franchise. I liked Mission Impossible I and II, I love Mission Impossible III and liked Ghost Protocal. I got even more excited when I saw the reviews for this movie and people were praising it calling it the best action movie of the summer and how it was more exciting than the last. I was pumped for this movie! Then... I saw the movie and was thoroughly disappointed with it.

Mission Impossible Rouge Nation to me was a boring, rehash of Ghost protocol that attempts for great things yet never follows through with them with boring main characters and a super anti-climatic ending. I know I'm going to get a lot of heat for this especially considering how almost universally acclaimed this movie has been so far (I'm getting deep flashbacks to my X-men Days of future past review.) But this is my review and thus my opinion and this is how I feel.

Before I go into the negatives I will go into the positives because while I was overall disappointed with the movie that doesn't mean that they're weren't some things I liked. First off the movie is extremely funny and the comedy is clever without being overbearing or distracting from the plot, the best jokes are given to Simon Pegg who is basically the heart of the movie. Speaking of Simon Pegg he, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames do a great job in their roles with Simon Pegg stealing the show, Ving Rhames acting as a great straight man and Jeremy Renner being a great counter-balance to Tom Cruise. All of them add a lot of dimension and color to very standard characters and are great to watch. The villain was well acted and Sean Harris did a good job with what little he was given.

On a technical level the cinematography is a highlight of the film with good angles, great shots of different action scenes and the choreography for all said action scenes are done well. Probably the best action sequences in the movie where Ethan swimming and holding his breath while trying to turn off an electrical system and the knife fight Ilsa has at the end of the movie. Both those sequences were the best because unlike the rest of the movie both scenes had a lot of suspense, tension and a realness to them that the other scenes didn't have.

   Now to the bad.

To me this movie was actually kind of boring. Besides the two actions scenes I mentioned the action scenes were subpar or kind of forgettable. The plane sequence was shown so much in the trailers that it lost a lot of it's excitement and it was really short and it had nothing really to do with the rest of the movie so it was pointless. The motorcycle sequence was the same nothing really wowing, the opera fight had potential but didn't really do anything until the end and the other action scenes I can barely remember. Nothing really happens at the end of the movie and it kind of ends on a weak note, they try to do something clever but that doesn't work that well because you forget why it's supposed to be clever.

Now while I liked everyone else in the movie the two people who I didn't like were the two leads Ethan Hunt and Ilsa Faust. Ethan Hunt has always been my least favorite part of these movies, I always found him just another boring generic action hero and the most interesting I've ever found him in was Mission Impossible III. They try to make him interesting in this film with saying that his methods are not the best and he ends hurting more people than helping them and might even be slightly insane at this point but like Ghost Protocol any potential character development with him is negated. Ilsa Faust has little to no personality other than being a badass femme fatal and like Ethan they try to make her interesting yet they never go anywhere with it and I had no clue how by the end of the movie she came to like Ethan romantically.

The last but biggest problem with this movie is how it under develops it's plot and villain. The plot is basically Ghost Protocol and the first movie smashed into one with the IMF being dissolved (Ghost Protocol) and Ethan going on the run (Mission impossible I) but they try to add a corrupt government plot and what they can do to the people working for them but the thing is they never go all the way with it and it doesn't get fully developed. You don't have to have a theme or message in your movie but if you do you better go all the way with it because the moment you touch on a good idea and don't do anything with it, it might as well have never been in the movie in the first place. On that same note while I like Sean Harris as the villain, his characters is never given any development and when certain things about him are mentioned they are so vague that it leaves you wanting more but not in a good way.

Mission Impossible Rouge Nation is not necessarily the worst movie of the year but to me it's a disappointing one. I do hope another one comes out because I do not want this to be the last one in the series and the send off to Tom Cruise.

I give this movie a 6.5/10~ A movie with a lot of potential, laughs and good actors and side characters that misses the mark and wastes a lot of it's potential.
